Karolinska Institutet, Department of Neurobiology, Care Sciences and Society

The Department of Neurobiology, Care Sciences and Society (NVS) conducts world leading research in aging, dementia, epidemiology and care sciences. This research extends from basic molecular and cell levels to clinical research and societal studies. NVS educates almost a third of KI students at basic and advanced levels. The Department has approximately 540 employees and a revenue 2023 of 530 million SEK. It comprises seven divisions, located at Campus Flemingsberg and Campus Solna.

The Division of Family Medicine and Primary Care is responsible for parts of the Study Programme in Medicine at KI. We have our own Research School in Family Medicine for doctoral students. Our research includes various projects in multimorbidity, common diseases such as diabetes, reduced kidney function and emotional distress in primary care. We have also projects in medical education. Approximately 100 persons , among them about 35 doctoral students, are affiliated to our division.

Do you want to contribute to top quality medical research?

The Division of Family Medicine and Primary Care has recently received funding from the Swedish Research Council for a new multi-year research project. The overarching goal is to investigate the relationship between chronic pain and the development of various cardiovascular diseases in several large Swedish and international study cohorts. We will combine traditional epidemiological research, which addresses questions about clinical relevance, with more innovative molecular epidemiological research, which can provide clues about the underlying mechanisms behind our findings.

Your mission

We are seeking one or two postdoctoral researchers with strong motivation to map new aspects of the interplay between chronic pain and the development of cardiovascular diseases. The position involves conducting research in Johan Ärnlöv's research group at the division of Family Medicine and Primary Care, as well as collaborating with Swedish and international pain researchers. The project has two parts: one focused on traditional cardiovascular epidemiology, examining the relationship between different types of pain exposure and the development of cardiovascular diseases in large Swedish and international study materials, and another with a more molecular biological focus, using large-scale measurements of metabolites, proteins, genes, and microbiota to find new mechanisms behind the links between pain and cardiovascular disease.

Moreover, the successful candidate is expected to play a role in grant applications, doctoral students supervision, teaching to undergraduate and graduate students, and in the expansion of the current research line.

The employment as postdoctoral researcher is time limited for 2 years. This is a full-time position.

Your profile

The successful candidate is expected to have:

- a completed a doctoral degree in cardiovascular epidemiology, pain research, or a similar field within the last 3 years before the application deadline (or earlier, due to special reasons). Experience in bioinformatics is an additional strong merit.

-experience in independently managing and processing large-scale epidemiological databases. Strong knowledge of statistics and programming in statistical programs such as R or STATA is necessary for the position. Experience in molecular epidemiological research, including proteomics, metabolomics, genomics, and microbiota (including bioinformatics), is meritorious but not required.

- a proven track record of diligent, timely academic work in epidemiological research, preferably with an interest in longitudinal studies investigating the relationship between risk factors for disease development.

- excellent communication skills and ability to interact effectively and productively with other researchers in the team and outside of the team. As the project is a collaborative effort with several national and international research groups, experience in international collaborations within the field is a strong merit.

- excellent English language skills in terms of oral and written communication.

Scientific expertise within cardiovascular epidemiology/ statistics will be most important when assessing applicants.

To be eligible for employment as a postdoctor a doctoral degree or a foreign degree deemed to be equivalent to a Swedish doctoral degree is required. This eligibility requirement must be fulfilled at the latest at the time of the employment decision. It is considered as an advantage if you have completed your doctoral degree within the last three years, if there are special reasons, your degree may have been completed earlier.
