The Department of Physiology and Pharmacology is one of the larger departments within Karolinska Institutet with 400 employees, 30 research groups, and 90 doctoral students. The main research and teaching areas include Physiology, Pharmacology, Anesthesiology, and Intensive care. Researchers connected to the department publish regularly in international high-impact science journals, a result of a collaborative environment and state-of-the-art equipment. 

The department is responsible for teaching in several freestanding courses and study programs in medicine, physiotherapy, dentistry, optometry, biomedicine, speech -and language pathology. As an employee at the department of Physiology and Pharmacology you will be part of a dynamic environment that promotes key innovations. 

The position is placed in the research laboratory of Associate Professor Carl Sellgren. The research group focuses on neurodevelopmental disorders using models derived from human induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs). A particular focus is the interplay between neurons and glia cells for the development and maintenance of appropriate brain circuits, and how aberrations can lead to disease involving disturbances in higher order brain functions. The position focus on research.

Your mission

The holder of the position is expected to i) supervise undergraduate and graduate students and organize work in the laboratory, ii) together with the research group leader take strategic decisions regarding prioritizations and orientation of the research line, iii) actively contribute with research funding. The employment as Assistant Professor is time limited for 6 years with the right to apply for promotion to Senior Lecturer.

Eligibility requirements

Those eligible for employment as an Assistant Professor are individuals who have been awarded a PhD or attained equivalent research competence. Preference should be given to those who were awarded a PhD or attained equivalent research competence no more than five years prior to the expiry of the application period for the position as assistant professor.

Those who have been awarded a PhD or attained equivalent research competence earlier may however be considered if special grounds exist. 

Special grounds refer to:

  • parental leave,
  • positions of trust in trade union organizations
  • mandatory service in the total defense forces
  • long-term illness
  • general medical internship (maximum 24 months)
  • specialist medical residency for clinically active professionals (maximum 24 months)

Ground, dates and extent must be clearly specified in the application and verified with relevant documentation.

We see that the candidate has extensive research experience in using iPSCs to generate brain organoid models. Given our research focus, experience with generating models that include microglia and oligodendroglia lineage cells is highly meriting. This also applies to experience using different omics approaches for single cell analyses as well as genetic engineering. We will also take previous experience in leading and organizing complex research projects into account.

Particular assessment for promotion to Senior Lecturer

An Assistant Professor employed in accordance with the Higher Education Ordinance Chapter 4 Section 12a shall be promoted to Senior Lecturer if he or she is eligible for an employment as Senior Lecturer in accordance with the Instructions regarding the Appointment Procedure for Teachers at Karolinska Institutet and is assessed to be suitable for such employment in accordance with the assessment criteria that KI has decided should be applied when being promoted to Senior Lecturer. The assessment criteria stated in the Instructions regarding the Appointment Procedure for Teachers at Karolinska Institutet that was valid at the time of appointment as Assistant Professor will be applied when applying for promotion to Senior Lecturer. Current assessment criteria is found here. Such promotion results in a permanent position as Senior Lecturer.
