- with focus on education and research
Do you want to contribute to top quality medical research?
The Department of Physiology and Pharmacology (FyFa) conducts education and research in physiology, pharmacology, anesthesiology, and intensive care at a high international level. The department has about 400 employees, 30 research groups, and 75 doctoral students. We offer a dynamic research and teaching environment in newly renovated premises in the newly built Biomedicum at Campus Solna, which is linked to corresponding clinical teaching and research environments at the Department of Perioperative Medicine and Intensive Care at Karolinska University Hospital. The research activities at the department include the fields of anesthesiology and intensive care, traumatology, cardiovascular and respiratory systems, neuropsychopharmacology, neuroinflammation, cellular signaling, pharmacogenetics, regenerative medicine, renal physiology, muscle physiology, and pain. The collaboration between preclinical and clinical researchers at Karolinska University Hospital provides excellent opportunities for translational research.
Description of the subject area
Anesthesiology and Intensive Care is a combined academic and clinical field, which also constitutes a medical specialty comprising the clinical activities of perioperative medicine and intensive care. The subject area is dominated by applied physiology and pharmacology and has for several decades had its academic development strongly linked to the Department of Physiology and Pharmacology. The Section of Anesthesiology and Intensive Care at the Department of Physiology and Pharmacology was established in 2005 and conducts internationally leading research and education primarily in anesthesiology, traumatology and intensive care. The academic activities take place in close collaboration with the Region Stockholm's health care services in perioperative medicine and intensive care and have for more than 15 years been an integrated part of the anesthesia, surgery, and intensive care activities at Karolinska University Hospital in Solna. The clinical activities in anesthesiology and intensive care at Karolinska University Hospital are comprised of a hospital-wide organization called the Function Perioperative Medicine and Intensive Care (PMI), to which the majority of the clinical researchers/teachers at the department are affiliated. For more than two decades, Karolinska University Hospital has had the country's largest trauma operation with a strong connection to education and research. Traumatology is a profile area for the hospital.
A research platform consisting of an experimental unit, a unit for clinical research, and a unit for outcomes research and epidemiology has been established with joint funding from Karolinska Institutet and the Region. At the section, there is a well-established translational research laboratory with access to cell and animal experimental models closely linked to technical platforms for genomics and proteomics and biochemical analyses on cell, animal, and human materials. The laboratory is an important basic scientific resource and is closely linked to clinical research in anesthesiology and intensive care. Function PMI has contributed with strategic funds to strengthen the infrastructure and connect the preclinical activities with the clinical research unit at PMI.
