At the Division of Insurance Medicine, Department of Clinical Neuroscience, we conduct research about different aspects of sickness absence, health, work and life situation. You will have the opportunity to work close to top researchers within the sickness absence field and contribute to high-quality research at the international level. The research questions are complex and require a great deal of interdisciplinarity and people with different educational backgrounds are part of the project. We also have a wide collaboration with other researchers in Sweden and internationally.

Description of the subject area

We are looking for a principal researcher in Insurance Medicine who will run several research projects regarding sickness absence. One project concerns sickness absence among women and men in different occupations, with a specific focus on health and social care occupations as well as white-and blue-collar collar workers, for instance within the retail and wholesale sector. Another project regards sickness absence among those who work after 65 and 70 years of age, and sex differences in this. Some of the aspects you will research are: what are the sickness absence patterns among these groups? How are sociodemographic and work-related factors associated with sickness absence? What associations are there between morbidity and sickness absence? How has this changed over time?

Your mission

The principal researchers role will be to conduct research and run research projects within Insurance Medicine independently and in a team. The work will be to conduct epidemiological studies about sickness absence and disability pension in different occupations and ages, in relation to, e.g., sociodemographic factors, work environment, and morbidity.

The position will involve managing and conducting epidemiological studies, some data management, analyzing data, writing manuscripts, teaching and supervising, collaborating in national and international research networks, applying for research funding, some administrative tasks such as project management, documentation, etc., and participating in spreading knowledge and engagement outside academia. The successful candidate are expected to contribute to the further development of the research group concerning methods, teaching, and collaboration with researchers within the research group, Karolinska Institutet, other Swedish universities and internationally.

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible for employment as a Principal Researcher, in addition to holding a Degree of Doctor, PhD, or having equivalent scientific expertise, the applicant must have demonstrated research expertise. The applicant must also be a Research Leader and have established their own line of research. The applicant should furthermore have shown documented, high-quality scientific production, particularly in the last six years and have the potential to energetically drive their research forward as well as be recognized nationally and internationally. The applicant should also have obtained good, long-term and preferably external funding and have the potential to obtain further external funding. The applicant should have shown teaching and supervision experience and demonstrated good leadership qualities.

Applicants must have solid experience in epidemiological and social science analysis of microdata from registries, in international collaboration, and in publication in internationally renowned scientific journals. Applicants are expected to have and continue to develop a strong research profile in the field.

Applicants must also have experience of independent responsibility for writing and finalizing manuscripts for scientific publication as well as managing and directing  other researchers, statisticians and research students in a team in these tasks. Good collaborative ability is a requirement for the position.

Excellent oral and written communication skills in both Swedish and English are mandatory.

  • Experience of participating in and coordinating international collaborative networks
  • Skill in scientific writing

  • Experience of analyses in e.g. SAS, STATA, SPSS or R
  • A structured and flexible way of working
  • Collaboration with actors in the surrounding society outside academia, the so-called “third task” of academia
