Do you want to contribute to top quality medical research?

The Department of Microbiology, Tumor and Cell Biology (MTC) at Karolinska Institutet conducts research and teaching within immunology, infection biology, cell biology and cancer. MTC have about 40 research groups and our key words are multidisciplinary, bridging, national and international collaborations.

Our laboratory is located at the Science for Life Laboratory (SciLifeLab, http://www.scilifelab.se/) in the Karolinska Institute campus. SciLifeLab is equiped with state-of-the-art instrumentation and core facilities, and is home to one of the largest sequencing cluster in Europe.

Our group combines experimental and computational work, and aims to develop and apply novel genome-wide techniques to address fundamental biological questions with medical implications. We are especially interested in how subtle variations in gene expression can lead to differential cellular phenotypes and are passionate about RNA biology (http://pelechanolab.com/). You will have the opportunity to work in a highly interdisciplinary and international environment and combine the development of state-of-the art genome-wide approaches with the molecular dissection of fundamental biological problems.

Are you interested in unravelling the eukaryotic post-transcriptional regulatory code? Would you like to combine the use of cutting-edge genome-wide technologies with synthetic biology and machine learning to study RNA life? Come and join us at SciLifeLab.

Your mission

The available research engineer position concerns developing and applying novel genomic approaches to study gene expression and mRNA life across Ascomycota. You will work in the context of a recently awarded ERC synergy project (EPIC - Unravelling the Eukaryotic Post-transcrIptional regulatory Code) in collaboration with the labs of Professor Kevin Verstrepen (Leuven) and Professor Julien Gagneur (Munich).

In this role you will focus on stablishing novel experimental pipelines to enable the high-throughput generation of high-quality genomic data. This will include development and automatization of novel NGS approaches. Further, you will perform original research, contribute to the training of junior colleagues, and acquire the required experimental and computational skills necessary for the completion of the project. It also includes coordination of sample and data exchange between Sweden, Germany, and Belgium in the context of a recently awarded ERC Synergy grant.

You are expected to communicate the scientific results contributing to the writing scientific papers and by attending scientific meetings. The ideal candidate will participate in the general duties of the team and effectively communicate with scientists of very diverse backgrounds in a highly interdisciplinary and international environment. Working language is English.

Your profile

Applicants to this position should have a bachelor’s degree in Biotechnology, Molecular Biology or similar field.

In addition to the above requirements for the position:

  • A strong interest in interdisciplinary technology development, and novel and creative thinking abilities
  • Extensive experience in NGS method development
  • Hands-on experience in liquid handling robotics
  • Experience in yeast genetics, with a focus on S. cerevisiae
  • Experience in DNA/RNA extraction
  • Experience with Illumina sequencers
  • Good interpersonal skills and ability to work in teams

Meritorious for the position:

  • Experience in transcription and post-transcriptional mRNA regulation
  • Experience in alternative polyadenylation
  • Experience in high-throughput yeast phenotyping and QTL mapping
  • Experience in project management and data reporting
  • Experience coordinating small teams in the academic and/or industrial sector
  • In the appointment, special weight will be attached to scientific skill of relevance to the project and to previous research experience
