The Department of Neuroscience includes several research groups working on different aspects of nervous system function, both under normal conditions and in various disease states. Research projects include a broad range of studies on the molecular and cellular levels, networks of neurons, and the organization of the nervous system as a whole.

Description of the subject area

We are looking for a committed, well-established scientist working in the field of systems neuroscience, with a special focus high-throughput synaptic connectomics and molecular profiling of circuits.

Your mission

The successful candidate is expected to lead a research team towards novel discoveries within the subject area, and to disseminate these findings at the international arena in the form of scientific publications and presentations at national and international research conferences and seminars. Other included tasks are research development with a particular focus on new translational approaches with potential clinical applications, management of personnel within the team, fund raising and promotion of internationalization at university level. He/she should also actively participate in other departmental activities when called upon.

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible for employment as a Principal Researcher, in addition to holding a Degree of Doctor, PhD, or having equivalent scientific expertise, the applicant must have demonstrated research expertise. The applicant must also be a Research Leader and have established their own line of research. The applicant should furthermore have shown documented, high-quality scientific production, particularly in the last six years and have the potential to energetically drive their research forward as well as be recognized nationally and internationally. The applicant should also have obtained good, long-term and preferably external funding and have the potential to obtain further external funding.  The applicant should have shown teaching and supervision experience and demonstrated good leadership qualities.

It is particularly meritorious that the applicant has shown

  • Ability to conduct internationally recognized high quality research as principal investigator.
  • Ability to successfully apply for competitive external funding.
  • Experience from international research institutes/universities.
  • Extensive international and national collaboration network.
  • Experience from internationalization processes at university level. 

It is meritorious that the applicant has shown

  •  Experience from editorial and reviewer activity for peer-review international scientific journals, and international experience as grant reviewer. 

After an overall assessment of the expertise and merits of the applicants in relation to the subject area, Karolinska Institutet will determine which of them has the best potential to contribute to a positive development of the activities at KI.
