Do you want to contribute to top quality medical research?

Join the dynamic and cooperative research group led by Prof. Maja Jagodic at the Department of Clinical Neuroscience (CNS). This opportunity allows you to contribute to interactive research fueled by relevant clinical inquiries, merging a deep molecular understanding of the mechanisms behind Multiple Sclerosis (MS) with access to some of the world's most competitive clinical resources. You'll benefit from a highly collaborative, engaged, and international research environment dedicated to exploring innovative translational ideas in precision medicine. This offers you the opportunity to conduct research at the forefront of the international field.

Your mission

We are looking for a research assistant to join our research team and collaborate with PhD students, postdocs, and senior researchers on deciphering multiple sclerosis pathogenesis. While working within a multidisciplinary team, you will benefit from the close supervision of our senior bioinformaticians. Your primary research focus will be to address the molecular mechanisms underlying immune and nervous dysfunction in MS disease. You will study this by conducting in-depth analysis of various omics data types, notably the methylome and transcriptome, obtained via state-of-the-art next-generation sequencing (NGS) technologies from immune cell types and cell lines. The successful candidate is expected to interact with many internal and extremal collaborators and to contribute to the efficient functioning of the unit.

Your profile

We are looking for a highly motivated candidate who shares our passion for translational research and epigenetics and holds a Master’s degree in a relevant field.

Eligibility requirements:

  • Scientific and/or research background on human diseases, immune mechanisms involved in autoimmunity and nervous processes involved in brain-related disorders.
  • Programming skills (especially in R).
  • Experience with NGS-based transcriptome and small RNome data analysis, including QC, filtering (adapter, quality, UMI), mapping, normalization, differential analysis (including statistics), pathway analysis and data interpretation.
  • Documented experience with profiling of methylome data including whole genome and array-based methods.
  • Experience with high-performance computing (HPC).
  • Knowledge of mechanisms of gene regulation and epigenetics, specifically DNA methylation and non-coding RNAs.
  • Ability to work independently as well as in collaboration with colleagues and students.

Meritorious:

The additional following skills would be judged favorably:

  • Theoretical and practical knowledge of multiple sclerosis disease from a clinical as well as research perspective.
  • Knowledge of CRISPR-based genome and epigenome editing.
  • Experience with multi-omic data integration such as methylation and expression.
  • Wet lab experience related to immunology, molecular biology and/or multiple sclerosis.

What do we offer?

A creative and inspiring environment with wide-ranging expertise and interests. Karolinska Institutet is one of the world's leading medical universities. Our vision is to pursue the development of knowledge about life and to promote a better health for all. At Karolinska Institutet, we conduct successful medical research and hold the largest range of medical education in Sweden. Karolinska Institutet is also a state university, which entitles you to several good benefits through our collective agreement. And you get to practice freely in our modern wellness facilities, where trained staff are on site.

Location: The Center for Molecular Medicine (Solna)
