Systems Medicine uses human patient samples to understand how hereditary factors interact with lifestyle and environmental factors in pathological processes. Systemic medicine has received increased international interest, especially through genetic population studies (GWAS) that show that the heritability of common diseases includes many risk variants with limited effect. This differs from monogenic diseases with few risk variants and great hereditary significance. Systems Medicine has in this way identified new disease genes for common diseases by studying changes in the transcriptome and proteome.
Overall, the subject systems medicine map how gene and protein expression in tissues related to common diseases changes over time.
