Karolinska Institutet,

- with focus on research

Do you want to contribute to better health for all?

Do you want to contribute to improving the understanding of genetic and biological factors that affect neurodevelopmental disorders (NDDs)? Are you interested in using genetics to enable improved diagnostics and effective interventions for NDDs?

At the Division of Neuropsychiatry at the KI Center of Neurodevelopmental Disorders (KIND) at the Department of Women’s and Children’s Health, world-leading preclinical and clinical research is conducted in the field of NDDs. To strengthen and develop successful research in these areas, we seek a senior lecturer with expertise in developmental neurogenetics.

Description of the subject area

At the Division of Neuropsychiatry at KIND, we conduct research in developmental neurogenetics, focusing on NDDs. Research projects in NDDs include autism, ADHD, language disorders, and dyslexia. The aim is to increase the understanding of genetic, biological, and environmental factors and their significance for NDDs, with the goal of improving diagnostics and creating interventions for individuals with these diagnoses.

Your mission

You are expected to lead a research group and to have a documented strong and internationally competitive research activity as indicated by publications and grants as well as “tredje uppgiften” (communicating research results to the public). Your focus is on medical and molecular neurogenetics regarding the analysis of genetic factors for NDDs, validating genetic findings, and applying genetic information to relevant clinical questions.

More specifically, you are expected to:

  •  Exercise strategic leadership within women's and children's health, specifically within the NDD area.
  • Supervise doctoral students and postdocs.
  • Participate in academic activities such as arranging seminars and courses, participating in dissertations, and assessing applications for research grants.
  • Participate in the ongoing development work at the department/institution/Karolinska Institutet.
  • Lead innovative and mutual collaborations with other research groups within and outside Karolinska Institutet and Region Stockholm.

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible for employment as a Senior Lecturer focusing on research, the applicant must hold a doctorate, PhD, or equivalent scientific expertise and demonstrate excellent scientific knowledge and good pedagogical skills. (See the instructions regarding the Appointment Procedure for Teachers at Karolinska Institutet).

The applicant is expected to have ongoing solid research in medical and molecular neurogenetics within NDD areas or another closely related research area. We are looking for a colleague with documented experience in international collaboration who has successfully applied for and obtained research funding as the main applicant from national or international grant providers.

The holder must have been the main supervisor of a doctoral student and have experience in teaching at the undergraduate or advanced level. The applicant must also write and speak English fluently.

Assessment criteria

The Senior Lectureship focuses on research. The assessment will weight qualifications as follows: scientific expertise (3), pedagogical expertise (2), and leadership, development, and collaboration expertise (2).

For employment as Senior Lecturer at Karolinska Institutet, the eligibility requirements and assessment criteria stated in the Instructions regarding the Appointment Procedure are applied to the defined employment profile.

It is particularly meritorious that you have demonstrated

  • Knowledge of and experience with population-level genetics, for example, regarding the use of NDD-related genetic factors together with early signs or various medical outcomes
  • Experience in experimental research to validate genetic findings

It is meritorious that you have demonstrated

  • International research experience
  • Experience in leadership and collaboration

It is a requirement that you have completed 10 weeks of courses on teaching in higher education, or have gained equivalent competence, as indicated in the recommendations of the Association of Swedish Higher Education Institution. If you lack such education at the time of employment, you must undergo such education during the first two years of employment.

After an overall assessment of the applicants' expertise and merits in relation to the subject area, Karolinska Institutet will determine which of them has the best potential to contribute to the positive development of KI's activities.
