The department of clinical sciences, Danderyd hospital (KI DS) was established in its current form 1993.. The department conducts clinical research in several different areas, and about 400 students undergo their basic medical training at KI DS annually. The department has about 90 registered PhD students and annually about 10 defend their dissertations for a doctoral degree in medicine. Approximately 250-300 articles are published annually in international peer-review journals. Extensive commissioned research is also ongoing. The department annually provides several courses for specialist competence in various subjects as well as further education courses for specialists and postgraduate courses.

Description of the subject area

The department of obstetrics and gynecology at Danderyd hospital is a large unit with extensive activities. The unit conducts patient-centered research focusing on diseases according to the hospital's patient assignments (obstetrics and benign gynecology) as well as education and training in gynecology and obstetrics for medical students. The department of obstetrics and gynecology at Danderyd hospital has a well-structured research unit with several research nurses, research midwifes, coordinators, supervisors and PhD students.

Your mission

As professor in obstetrics and gynecology you will lead and continue to develop research. You will also lead the operations within the USV unit for women’s healthcare and childbirth.

You will have an overall responsibility for the education in Obstetrics and Gynecology at Danderyd hospital, and responsible for the course in obstetrics and gynecology within the medical program, but other educational assignments may also be relevant.

An important part of the work will also involve developing and communicating academic leadership in education and research within the area of operation. You will also collaborate with other departments within Karolinska Institutet and with various operations in the region.

The position is divided as 70% employment at Karolinska Institutet as a professor, and 30% as at least a specialist trained physician at the women's healthcare and childbirth unit.

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible for an employment as Professor with focus on research the applicant must have demonstrated good pedagogical expertise and excellent scientific expertise (See the instructions regarding the Appointment Procedure for Teachers at Karolinska Institutet ref. no 1-23/2022 ).

The position will be combined with a position as at least a specialist trained physician in Obstetrics and Gynecology at Danderyd hospital and therefore you must have an MD with specialist competence in Obstetrics and Gynecology, or corresponding competence, as well as fulfill the National Board of Health and Welfare's requirements for practicing medicine in Sweden.

Since the employment includes clinical work, you must, besides English, demonstrate proficiency in Swedish, Norwegian or Danish (C1 level according to the common European reference scale, CERS).

In case you conduct research only in gynecology (not in obstetrics), you shall focus on benign gynecology as the hospital does not have a mission related to malignant gynecology.

The applicant shall also have completed 10 weeks of courses on teaching in higher education (or have equivalent competence), as indicated in the recommendations of the Association of Swedish Higher Education Institution. If the person appointed for the position is lacking such education at the time of the employment, the appointee must undergo such education during the first two years of employment.

Assessment criteria

The employment has a focus on research.

The assessment will weight qualifications as follows: scientific expertise (3), pedagogical expertise (2), leadership, development and collaboration expertise (2) and clinical expertise (2).

For employment as professor at Karolinska Institutet, the eligibility requirements and assessment criteria stated in the Instructions regarding the Appointment Procedure are applied in relation to established profile of employment.

It is meritorious that you can demonstrate:

  • Previous responsibility for courses or course components within medical education.
  • Competence to act as senior specialist on call.
  • Experience in both obstetric and gynecological research
