Your mission

Employment as Assistant Professor is time-limited to a maximum of six years but includes the possibility to apply for promotion to a permanent position as Senior Lecturer. The purpose of the employment as Assistant Professor is to develop research skills as an independent researcher and acquire scientific and pedagogical qualifications. The position has a focus on research but may also include teaching and management tasks. The terms for the employment are to be negotiated with the host Department.

Eligibility requirements

Those eligible for employment as Assistant Professor are individuals who have been awarded a PhD or attained equivalent research competence. Preference will be given to those who were awarded a PhD or attained equivalent research competence no more than 5 years prior to the close of the application period.

Individuals who have been awarded a PhD or attained equivalent research competence earlier than 5 years may be considered if special circumstances exist, which include:

  • parental leave
  • positions of trust in trade union organisations,
  • mandatory service in the total defense 
  • long-term illness
  • general medical internship (maximum 24 months)
  • specialist medical residency for clinically active professionals (maximum 24 months).

The specific circumstance, dates, and extent must be clearly specified in the application and verified with relevant documentation.

The applicant should have demonstrated the ability to conduct research of high quality in recent years.

The applicant should have published in internationally leading journals in their research field in recent years with a prominent position in the list of authors, preferably as first and/or last author. The applicant must have demonstrated ability to obtain external financing as principal applicant.

Assessment criteria

Scientific expertise will be most important when assessing applicants, mainly based on two assessment criteria: the applicant’s competence and the scientific quality of the research project. Please visit our website for more information about the assessment criteria.

Information about the position as Assistant Professor through this call

The successful applicant is expected to negotiate employment conditions with the Head of one (or more) relevant Department(s) at KI. The employment is to be agreed with the host Department, which is responsible for the salary negotiation.

The position as Assistant Professor is a fixed-term career development position lasting for a maximum of 6 years at KI. The employment should commence at the host Department no later than 12 months after the decision has been made.

The host Department will be assigned a base amount of SEK 1,000,000 per appointment per year for a maximum of 6 years. The funds are to be used for salary and salary-related costs in connection to the position.

An applicant who is already employed as Assistant Professor at KI can only obtain a new position within the framework of this announcement if the applicant has been employed for less than two years. The total period of employment may not exceed six years.

If an applicant who is awarded a position through the call is already employed as Assistant Professor (biträdande lektor) at KI, the time already used in this position will be deducted and the allocated salary funds will also be reduced correspondingly.

A start-up grant for research is awarded to applicants that are granted a position as Assistant Professor, with a total amount of 2 500 000 SEK (distributed 1 000 000 SEK in year one, 1 000 000 SEK in year two and 500 000 SEK in year three).

Particular assessment for promotion to Senior Lecturer

An Assistant Professor employed in accordance with the Higher Education Ordinance Chapter 4 Section 12a shall be promoted to Senior Lecturer if he/she is eligible for an employment as Senior Lecturer in accordance with the Instructions regarding the Appointment Procedure for Teachers at KI and is assessed to be suitable for such employment in accordance with the assessment criteria that KI has decided for promotion to Senior Lecturer. The assessment criteria stated in the Instructions regarding the Appointment Procedure for Teachers at KI that was valid at the time of appointment as Assistant Professor will be applied if applying for promotion to Senior Lecturer. The current evaluation criteria can be found here. If promotion is decided it results in a permanent position as Senior Lecturer.
