The Department of Neurobiology, Care Sciences and Society (NVS) conducts world leading research in aging, dementia, epidemiology and care sciences. This research extends from basic molecular and cell levels to clinical research and societal studies. NVS educates almost a third of KI students at basic and advanced levels. The Department has approximately 540 employees and a revenue 2023 of 530 million SEK. It comprises seven divisions, located at Campus Flemingsberg and Campus Solna.
The Division of Neurogeriatrics consists of about 65 employees. The division conducts experimental and translational research related primarily to Alzheimer's disease and other neurodegenerative diseases, but also more general molecular mechanisms with biomedical relevance are studied. The division is mainly located in BioClinicum, KI Campus Solna, and partially in Neo, KI Campus Flemingsberg.
The research group of Ivan Nalvarte is looking for a highly motivated postdoctoral researcher to study the effect of sex hormones on the aging brain. The research focuses on understanding how altered sex hormone signaling during different life stages modulates mental health, cognition, and dementia. We use both animal models and complex 3D cell models with advanced genomic techniques to address our research questions.
Sex hormones do not only regulate reproduction, they also participate in healthy brain aging and in well-being. Still, it is not well-known how sex hormones regulate molecular processes that shape our brain and how they interact with risk and resilience factors that may account for sex differences in healthy brain aging. You will be part of a larger project that studies critical phases in life in which an individual’s susceptibility to depression and mental illness is heightened and strongly influenced by changes in endocrine signalling, namely pre- and early postnatal life, puberty, peripartum, and transition into older age. You will also be part of a project that studies the effect of young adult hormonal interventions in risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease. This project addresses the concerns about healthy-brain aging in transgender individuals that have undergone gender-affirming hormonal treatments. Animal behavior studies, epigenomic and single-cell transcriptomic analyses, and brain organoid development and culturing, are among the methods you will use in the lab. We work multidisciplinary by integrating experimental data with human epidemiological data. You are expected to be part of the group and to work and develop in accordance with the common group goals and research interests.
To be eligible for employment as a postdoctor a doctoral degree or a foreign degree deemed to be equivalent to a doctoral degree is required. This eligibility requirement must be fulfilled at the latest at the time of the employment decision. It is considered as an advantage if you have completed your doctoral degree within the last three years, if there are special reasons, your degree may have been completed earlier.
We seek a highly motivated and team-oriented postdoctoral researcher with a background in neuroscience. You must have experience in mouse behavior studies and in cell culturing and be well acquainted with modern genomic technologies. It is highly advantageous if you have experience in brain organoid culturing and in neuroendocrinology. Successful candidates are enthusiastic, responsible, able to work independently performing their own experiments and analyses. They are expected to provide support in experimental design and experimentation to other members of the group and are willing to take on lab-administrative tasks. Fluency in written and spoken English is a requirement.
The position is a fixed-term employment for two years, with the possibility of extension.
