Description of the subject area

The Department of Medicine Solna (MedS) has a well established and strong research profile within biomedicine and clinical medicine at a high international level. The division of clinical epidemiology (KEP) at MedS holds clinical, epidemiological and biostatistical expertise with the goal to reach increased knowledge and improve treatment of a range of disease groups. At KEP, translational, clinical and epidemiological research is conducted with the aim to deepen our knowledge of mechanisms of disease development, and to improve our ability to predict disease risk and prognosis. Above all, the research aims to improve health care and patient management, for example through answering questions about safety and efficacy of different treatments.

KEP is also part of Clinicum at KI, which is a broad initiative to support and strengthen methodological competence among researchers at KI and Region Stockholm.

Your mission

The position is oriented towards research.

We are now searching for a Senior Lecturer in biostatistics, where the position includes responsibility to lead and further develop the subject area of biostatistics at KEP.

You are expected to perform biostatistical research in the intersection with epidemiology and lead the development of biostatistics as a subject area at the division of clinical epidemiology (KEP)

Since a specific aim of the position is to strengthen coordination and leadership of scientific competence in biostatistics, you are also expected to take active part in the strategic leadership of biostatistics at KEP and within Clinicum at KI.

The position further includes planning, execution, and evaluation of educational activities for statisticians and non-statisticians at the master and post-graduate levels.

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible for an employment as Senior Lecturer with focus on research, in addition to holding a Degree of Doctor, PhD, or having equivalent scientific expertise, the applicant must have demonstrated scientific and pedagogical expertise as well as good leadership and development skills.

The person we are looking for should be an established independent researcher with a university degree in statistics, mathematical statistics, or similar subject,  and with a biostatistical or epidemiological research profile, documented through number and quality of peer-reviewed publications in international scientific journals during recent years The applicant must have received, as principal applicant, national or international research grants in competition and have the potential to secure further grants in the field.

Assessment criteria

The Senior Lectureship has a focus on research. The assessment will weight qualifications as follows: scientific expertise (3), pedagogical expertise (2), leadership, development and collaboration expertise (2).

For employment as Senior Lecturer at Karolinska Institutet, the eligibility requirements and assessment criteria stated in the Instructions regarding the Appointment Procedure are applied in relation to established profile of employment.

It is particularly meritorious that you have demonstrated

  • Experience of leadership, development and cooperation within biostatistics or epidemiology
  • Experience of teaching in biostatistics or epidemiology

It is meritorious that you have demonstrated

  • Experience of register-based research
  • Experience of commissions of trust
  • Experience of cooperation with health care or the pharmaceutical industry
  • Experience of international research collaboration

It is a requirement that you have completed at least 10 weeks of courses on teaching in higher education, or have gained equivalent competence, as indicated in the recommendations of the Association of Swedish Higher Education Institution. If you lack such education at the time of employment, you must undergo such education during the first two years of employment.

After an overall assessment of the expertise and merits of the applicants in relation to the subject area, Karolinska Institutet will determine which of them has the best potential to contribute to a positive development of the activities at KI. Since the position aims to develop and lead a scientific area, personal merits such as cooperation skills will be important in the overall evaluation.
