The Department of Microbiology, Tumor and Cell Biology (MTC) at Karolinska Institutet conducts research and teaching within immunology, infection biology, cell biology and cancer. MTC have about 40 research groups and our key words are multidisciplinary, bridging, national and international collaborations.
The behavior and physiology of microorganisms significantly determines the fate of the infection. Thereby, the raise of pandemic multidrug resistant microbes contributes to the emergence and spread of antimicrobial resistance. You are the right applicant for this position, if you are self-driven, highly engaged, have ambitious goals, want to perform high-quality research and documented achievements. A plus is if you like to work on the molecular basis of a challenging and important clinical problem with up to date experimental approaches to create novel knowledge at the forefront of the research field.
Pandemic microbial clones, often, but not necessarily associated with multidrug resistance, can arise within a pathogenic bacterial species and can cause a wide range of infections worldwide. Thereby the molecular mechanisms of pandemic spread in multiple diverse environments are not fully resolved. Besides antimicrobial resistance, biofilm formation, but also enhanced stress tolerance can be major survival mechanisms in the environment and the host. Whether a number of different factors contribute combinatorial to environmental survival and successful host infection needs still to be sorted out.
As a research assistant, you will be responsible for your specific part of the research project(s), namely to unravel survival and persistence mechanisms of clones of pandemic pathogens. Your experimental approach includes standard experimental approaches in molecular bacteriology, bacterial genetics and molecular biology including RNA-sequencing. You are expected to teach experimental approaches to visiting undergraduate and graduate students. You are also expected to collaborate within the research group and externally. Engagement in the preparation of scientific publications is expected. We offer active participation in scientific meetings on all levels.
Working language is English.
