The Department of Neurobiology, Care Sciences and Society (NVS) conducts world leading research in aging, dementia, epidemiology and care sciences. This research extends from basic molecular and cell levels to clinical research and societal studies. NVS educates almost a third of KI students at basic and advanced levels. The Department has approximately 540 employees and a revenue 2023 of 530 million SEK. It comprises seven divisions, located at Campus Flemingsberg and Campus Solna.

Aging Research Center (ARC), a division within NVS, is located at KI Campus Solna, Stockholm. It is a multidisciplinary academic environment, representing medicine (e.g., neurology, epidemiology, psychiatry, geriatrics), psychology (e.g., cognition, structural, functional, and molecular brain imaging), and social gerontology (e.g., sociology, public health, social epidemiology, social work). The center has around 70 employees, it has a strong focus on research with unique research resources, such as large-scale longitudinal studies and nationwide registries.

Your mission

We are seeking a highly motivated candidate with a keen interest in investigating the biological signature of dementia and cognitive disorders, with an emphasis on the interplay with somatic conditions and aging-related biomarkers. As an assistant professor at ARC, you will conduct independent research across various projects, focusing on:

1) Advancing our understanding on the validity of blood biomarkers for dementia in a general population setting, while considering factors influencing biomarkers levels and diagnostic accuracy.

2) Expand our understanding of the biology of dementia in the oldest, by studying different possible pathways underlying the onset of the disorder.

The successful candidate will play a pivotal role in applying for and leading national and international grants, overseeing research group activities, supervising doctoral students, and teaching undergraduate and graduate courses.

The selected candidate will be also be involved in data collection, including the assessment of neurodegenerative disorders among participants enrolled in the ongoing population-study associated with this position.

The full-time employment as Assistant Professor is time limited for four years with the right to apply for promotion to Senior Lecturer.

Eligibility requirements

Those eligible for employment as an Assistant Professor are individuals who have been awarded a PhD or attained equivalent research competence. Preference should be given to those who were awarded a PhD or attained equivalent research competence no more than five years prior to the expiry of the application period for the position as assistant professor.

Those who have been awarded a PhD or attained equivalent research competence earlier may however be considered if special grounds exist. 

Special grounds refer to:

  • parental leave,
  • positions of trust in trade union organizations
  • mandatory service in the total defense forces
  • long-term illness

Ground, dates and extent must be clearly specified in the application and verified with relevant documentation.

Bases of assessment

The successful candidate is expected to:

  • Hold an MD degree with specialization and had clinical experience in neurology/neurogeriatrics.
  • Have a PhD in epidemiology with a focus in aging research.
  • Demonstrated experience in conducting independent research, including leading single studies and securing research grants in the field of aging.
  • Possess strong analytical skills and proficiency in advanced statistical methods.
  • Exhibit excellent communication skills and ability to interact effectively and productively with other researchers in the team.
  • Have teaching experience.
  • Demonstrate excellent proficiency in oral and written English communication.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in Swedish.

Scientific expertise will be most important when assessing applicants.

Particular assessment for promotion to Senior Lecturer

An Assistant Professor employed in accordance with the Higher Education Ordinance Chapter 4 Section 12a shall be promoted to Senior Lecturer if he or she is eligible for an employment as Senior Lecturer in accordance with the Instructions regarding the Appointment Procedure for Teachers at Karolinska Institutet and is assessed to be suitable for such employment in accordance with the assessment criteria that KI has decided should be applied when being promoted to Senior Lecturer. The assessment criteria stated in the Instructions regarding the Appointment Procedure for Teachers at Karolinska Institutet that was valid at the time of appointment as Assistant Professor will be applied when applying for promotion to Senior Lecturer. Current assessment criteria is found here. Such promotion results in a permanent position as Senior Lecturer.
