The Department of Medical Epidemiology and Biostatistics conducts research in epidemiology and biostatistics across a broad range of areas within biomedical science. The department is among the largest of its type in Europe and has especially strong research profiles in psychiatric, cancer, reproductive, pediatric, pharmaco, genetic, and geriatric epidemiology, eating disorders, precision medicine, and biostatistics.

Part of the success of our department is due to our collaborative spirit where one factor is that researchers at the Department share and co-finance common resources (e.g., IT and an applied biostatistics group). The Centre for Eating Disorders Innovation (CEDI) was established under the auspices of the Swedish Research Council. We are an interdisciplinary team and we employ a diverse set of methodologies including genetic epidemiology, molecular genetics, neuroimaging, biomarkers, microbiology, animal models to enhance knowledge about the causes, treatments, and prevention of eating disorders.

We are seeking an experienced research assistant who is enthusiastic about research on avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder (ARFID).

Your mission

At CEDI, you will be part of several ongoing research projects on eating disorders with a focus on ARFID. As a relatively recently defined feeding and eating disorder, the etiology of ARFID is still quite poorly understood. Although it is conceptualized as one disorder, the causes of food avoidance in ARFID are heterogeneous and have strong ties to neurodevelopmental, psychiatric, and somatic disorders.

Using phenotypic, genetic, and twin data from several large-scale data collections, our group comprehensively examines the genetic and environmental causes of ARFID and its relation to other mental and somatic disorders, including other eating disorders. Under the supervision of our group, your mission will be to apply epidemiological designs as well as twin methodology and polygenic risk scores (PRS), conduct statistical analyses, and prepare presentations and scientific articles.

You will be part of the ARFID InitiativE Sweden (ARIES)—an upcoming large-scale data collection of 6 to 14-year-old children with and without ARFID. You will also contribute to building and maintaining our central CEDI database (CEDIX), which includes all data collected and available at CEDI.

Your profile

Applicants should have a Master’s degree (or equivalent) in a relevant area such as, but not limited to psychology, medicine, genetics, or nutrition. Previous experience in eating disorders research is strongly preferred. Previous publications and experience in working with epidemiological data are beneficial. Strong applied statistical skills and experience using statistical software such as R and SAS are desired. Fluency in English essential, but fluency in Swedish is not required.
