The Unit of Integrative Epidemiology at Institute for Environmental Medicine (IMM), Karolinska Institutet (KI), aims to improve the understanding of the causes and consequences of health and diseases, with a focus on neurodegenerative diseases, psychiatric disorders, and cancer. We strive for multidisciplinary approaches in epidemiologic research and integrate different scientific tools when addressing specific research questions.  

The Unit of Integrative Epidemiology at IMM is now looking for 2 postdoctoral researchers to lead and coordinate projects as part of an international collaboration relating to neuropsychiatric disorders and other somatic diseases, using data from national registers, longitudinal cohorts, and biobanks.  

Your mission

We are interested in studying the relationship between neuropsychiatric disorders, including both psychiatric disorders and neurodevelopmental disorders, and later life somatic diseases including cancer, infections, cardiometabolic diseases, and neurodegenerative diseases. As a postdoctoral fellow, you are expected to take a leading role in the entire research process, from research planning and project administration, ethical application, data processing and analysis, to interpretation and dissemination of research findings. You will be working as part of an international collaboration that involves partners from several countries, as well as close collaborations across departments at Karolinska Institutet. You are also expected to participate in the supervision of doctoral or master students and teaching. This position provides a fixed employment of 2 years.  

Your profile

To be eligible for employment as a postdoctor a doctoral degree or a foreign degree deemed to be equivalent to a doctoral degree is required. This eligibility requirement must be fulfilled at the latest at the time of the employment decision. It is considered as an advantage if you have completed your doctoral degree within the last three years, if there are special reasons, your degree may have been completed earlier.

Specific requirements for the position: 

  • Doctoral degree in medical sciences, epidemiology, biostatistics, bioinformatics, or a related field.
  • Research experience in psychiatric disorders, neurodevelopmental disorders, or other chronic diseases
  • Strong background in epidemiology and biostatistics
  • Advanced skills in statistical software (R, Python, SAS or Stata)
  • Proficient knowledge of English

Because of the heavy emphasis on statistical programming required for this position, we request that you submit 1-2 samples of your code from one of the above programs with a paragraph explaining what the code accomplishes. Because scientific writing and research communication are also key tasks in this position, we also ask that you submit a sample of your scientific writing where you can demonstrate that you had the primary responsibility for writing (i.e., a first author paper or manuscript). 

Experience with advanced epidemiological analyses (such as mediation analyses, Mendelian Randomization, and family-based study designs) is advantageous. Experience from international collaboration, project administration, and/or teaching will also be appreciated.
