Karolinska Institutet, Department of Neurobiology, Care Sciences and Society

The Department of Neurobiology, Care Sciences and Society (NVS) conducts world leading research in aging, dementia, epidemiology and care sciences. This research extends from basic molecular and cell levels to clinical research and societal studies. NVS educates almost a third of KI students at basic and advanced levels. The Department has approximately 540 employees and a revenue 2023 of 530 million SEK. It comprises seven divisions, located at Campus Flemingsberg and Campus Solna.

The Division of Neurogeriatrics consists of about 65 employees. The division conducts experimental and translational research related primarily to Alzheimer's disease and other neurodegenerative diseases, but also more general molecular mechanisms with biomedical relevance are studied. The division is mainly located in BioClinicum, KI Campus Solna, and partially in Neo, KI Campus Flemingsberg.

Do you want to contribute to top quality medical research?

Your mission

The ultimate goal is to develop novel treatment strategies and biomarkers for Alzheimer disease. To reach this goal we will elucidate the pathological pathways that lead to Alzheimer disease at the molecular and cellular level. In our studies we use neuronal cultures as well as brain tissue from mouse or human. You will analyze Alzheimer-related pathways in primary neurons by using confocal and super-resolution microscopy. You will be responsible for preparing primary cultures of cortical and hippocampal mouse or rat neurons and labeling these with appropriate antibodies and labels. Other cell biological and biochemical approaches will also be used. Mass spectrometric approaches will be used to identify molecules – for instance glycoproteins and glycans – involved in pathogenesis. Finally, molecules and delivery systems targeting the pathogenic pathways will be developed.

We are searching for 1-2 postdocs. The position is for temporary employment for two years.

Your profile

We are looking for a highly motivated person that is well acquainted with basic biochemical, and cell biological techniques or analytical chemistry, protein chemistry and glycobiology. Experience from cell culturing and confocal microscopy or other fluorescence microscopy technique is required. Previous experience from studies on synapse organization, protein trafficking, advanced microscopy techniques, electron microscopy, mass spectrometry, cloning, nanodelivery, neuroscience and membrane proteins is meritorious. Good teamwork skills, the ability to work independently, and very good knowledge of English, both written and spoken, are also required.

To be eligible for employment as a postdoctor a doctoral degree or a foreign degree deemed to be equivalent to a doctoral degree is required. This eligibility requirement must be fulfilled at the latest at the time of the employment decision. It is considered as an advantage if you have completed your doctoral degree within the last three years, if there are special reasons, your degree may have been completed earlier.
