Do you want to contribute to top quality medical research?

The Department of Laboratory Medicine consists of seven divisions in which both research and teaching are conducted. The department is involved in advanced research in both basic and applied research. All divisions operate in close contact with clinics at Karolinska University Hospital.
The Division of Clinical Microbiology conducts activities characterized by multidisciplinary research in infectious diseases that contribute translational knowledge to the development of new diagnostics and treatment methods. The innate immunity research team in the Systems Virology lab is currently seeking a motivated research specialist with an interest in contributing to research on the regulation of innate immunity by RNA-binding proteins in the context of viral infections.

The position is temporary and part-time for 1 year.

Description of the subject area

The overall goal of our research focus is to understand virus-host interactions using integrative approaches. We aim to deepen our understanding of how the innate immune response is regulated during viral infections and how viruses can evade antiviral defenses. The primary aim of this research project is to gain insights into the functions of two cellular proteins, namely ZC3H11A and LARP4b, in the context of viral translation and the regulation of cellular translation during viral infection using Adenovirus and SARS-CoV-2 as the model system.

Your mission

We are looking for a highly experienced researcher with experience in molecular virology, RNA-binding proteins and their regulation of translational machinery. We are looking for a person who is involved in research regarding how viral infections lead to changes in the proteome, especially how these changes are manifested in the ribosomal fraction in the context of identifying specific changes in translation associated with viral infection and how it affects the innate immune system. A major focus will be the characterization of the function of cellular proteins, such as ZC3H11A and LARP4b, which have crucial roles in the regulation of viral translation and the restoration of cellular translation during viral infection may lead to the discovery of new targets for antiviral therapies.

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible for employment as a Research Specialist, in addition to holding a Degree of Doctor, PhD, or having equivalent scientific expertise, the applicant must have demonstrated research expertise as well as have documented research experience after defending their doctoral dissertation.

In addition to the above, we would like to see documented research competence and documented research experience after the doctoral dissertation. You should be highly creative and productive and have broad experience of working with RNA-binding proteins in the context of viral infections and regulation of cellular translation processes. This will be demonstrated by presenting relevant publications in the field, preferably as first author. You should be able to communicate ideas effectively and have experience in supervision and teaching at university level.

We are looking for a highly motivated and enthusiastic individual with a clear interest in the research conducted in our lab. You should have the ability to collaborate effectively with the research team while showing motivation and the ability to independently take responsibility and drive the project forward. Being in an international and interdisciplinary research environment with extensive international collaborations, you must be skilled in communicating both orally and in written English.

Assessment criteria

It is particularly meritorious that the applicant has shown

  • Experience in working with RNA-binding proteins
  • Technical expertise in the study of translation mechanisms
  • Published high-impact research articles as first author.

It is meritorious that the applicant has shown

  • Experience working with ZC3H11A and/or LARP4b proteins
  • Experience working with viruses and innate immune responses
  • Received independent grants
  • Teaching experience at master level and supervision of students for their master thesis

After an overall assessment of the expertise and merits of the applicants in relation to the subject area, Karolinska Institutet will determine which of them has the best potential to contribute to a positive development of the activities at KI.
