Do you want to contribute to top quality medical research?

Cancer is a complex disease that affects a large part of the population. We strive to find new and innovative approaches to cancer treatment, interdisciplinary research ranging from molecular to organism level. The Department of Microbiology, Tumor and Cell Biology (MTC) at Karolinska Institutet in Solna conducts research and teaching in immunology, infection biology, cell biology, and cancer. MTC has approximately 430 active employees, including 81 doctoral students, 77 postdoctoral researchers, and 32 professors. Keywords include interdisciplinary, bridging, transnational, national, and international collaborations.

Division

The work in Marie Arsenian Henriksson's research group focuses on understanding the molecular mechanisms behind MYC-driven cancer, while Michael Landreh's research group works with protein technology and mass spectrometry to understand the structure-function relationship in these protein systems. The laboratories include facilities for cell biology, imaging, protein expression, and characterization, as well as state-of-the-art mass spectrometry. We routinely use advanced live cell microscopy, cell sorting, and animal models to study molecular mechanisms in cancer. This allows us to combine structural biology with cellular disease models to study protein function from the molecular to organism level.

Duties

The applicant will work with a peptide system for MYC inhibitors in cancer cells. The focus of the postdoctoral project is to continue the ongoing work on liquid-liquid phase separation of synthetic peptides that bind peptides with anticancer function and deliver them into living cancer cells. The postdoctoral researcher will express and purify synthetic peptides, follow their incorporation into peptide coacervates, and analyze their activity in cancer cells using live cell imaging and viability assays.

Entry requirements

Scholarships for postdoctoral qualification can be established for foreign researchers who place their qualifications in Sweden. The purpose of scholarships for postdoctoral qualification is to promote internationalization and contribute to research qualification after a doctorate or equivalent.

A scholarship for carrying out postdoctoral research can be granted for a maximum of two years within a four year period following the receipt of a doctoral degree or equivalent.
To be eligible for a postdoctoral scholarship, the person must have obtained a doctorate or a foreign degree deemed to be equivalent to a doctorate. Applicants who have not completed a doctorate at the end of the application period may also apply, provided that all requirements for a completed degree are met before the (intended) start date of the post doctoral education.

The head of the department determines whether their previous training and scholarly qualifications correspond to a Swedish doctorate or higher.

Location: Solna

Who are you?

In addition to the aforementioned requirements, the applicant is expected to have:

  • Documented experience with synthetic peptides, liquid-liquid phase separation, and cell and molecular biology of cancer cells, as well as survival and metabolic analysis with IncuCyte and FACS.

Emphasis is placed on personal interaction, readiness for teamwork, and excellent English skills.

Type of scholarship

The amount is tax free and it is set for twelve months at a time, paid out on a six months basis. In exceptional cases, shorter periods may be acceptable.

Application process

An application must contain the following documents in English or Swedish:

  • A complete curriculum vitae, including date of the thesis defence, title of the thesis, previous academic positions, academic title, current position, academic distinctions, and committee work
  • A complete list of publications
  • A summary of current work (no more than one page)

The application is to be submitted on the Varbi recruitment system.
