The Department of Neurobiology, Care Sciences and Society (NVS) conducts world leading research in aging, dementia, epidemiology and care sciences. This research extends from basic molecular and cell levels to clinical research and societal studies. NVS educates almost a third of KI students at basic and advanced levels. The Department has approximately 540 employees and a revenue 2023 of 530 million SEK. It comprises seven divisions, located at Campus Flemingsberg and Campus Solna.

The Division of Clinical Geriatric, with over 100 employed and affiliated researchers are located both in Neo, Campus Flemingsberg and in the Q-building in Solna. We conduct research focusing on cognitive impairment, dementia, and other aging related disorders, and education, among other medical graduates. Our research is multi-faceted and is in close collaboration with leading institutions and clinics worldwide. The research is clinically oriented with an emphasis on diagnosis, prevention and treatment. The division has a close cooperation with the Medical Unit Aging within Theme Inflammation and Aging at Karolinska University Hospital.

You will join a multidisciplinary research team of doctors, epidemiologists, statisticians, machine learning researchers and engineers working to explore dementia, detect factors to prevent dementia, slow cognitive decline in patients with dementia, ensure high quality and equal access to dementia care throughout Sweden. We work in the SveDem group (Professor Maria Eriksdotter’s research group).

Your mission

Our group conducts registry research using the Swedish Registry for Cognitive and Dementia Disease (SveDem) (with over 100 000 patients) and other registers. The aim is to identify medications which patients take for other comorbidities, which impact cognitive and functional decline and mortality in patients with dementia.

Your duties will include independent management of large datasets, data cleaning, performing statistical analysis at an advanced level, article and grant writing and driving research results through all stages of peer review until successful publication.

Additionally, you are expected to collaborate and communicate with other members of the team, obtain ethics approvals and coordinate registry merging with Swedish authorities, provide epidemiological and statistical support for different projects in our group.

We encourage you to develop your own research projects and collaborations. A successful candidate can adapt easily and collaborate with team members with different knowledge and/or academic backgrounds.

Your profile

We are looking for a candidate with a strong background in epidemiology and statistics. A strong background in register-based analyses, dementia, multivariate and longitudinal data analysis, survival analysis, causal inference, pharmacoepidemiology, incidence and prevalence trends analysis is appreciated. Knowledge of the cholesterol metabolism is particularly relevant.

Qualified to be employed as a postdoctor is one who has obtained a doctorate or has equivalent scientific competence. It is considered as an advantage if you have completed your doctoral degree within the last three years, if there are special reasons, your degree may have been completed earlier. Applicants who have not completed a doctorate at the end of the application period may also apply, provided that all requirements for a completed degree are met before the (intended) date of employment. This must be substantiated by the applicant's main supervisor, director or equivalent.

Requirements 

  • You should have a PhD in medical science, medicine, epidemiology, health economics, physics, computer science, econometrics, pharmacoepidemiology, mathematical statistics, statistics, biostatistics, bioinformatics or other relevant disciplines.
  • Excellent English writing skills and proven ability to communicate complex information clearly.
  • Data management and analysis skills (R, SAS, Stata, SPSS or similar program).

Merits 

  • Swedish language skills.
  • Experience with registry research and Swedish registries and/or causal inference with observational data.
  • A track record of successful grant applications.
  • Clinical knowledge and experience and experience in clinical trials. 
  • Knowledge of the Swedish healthcare organization.
  • Interest in developing new projects and methods.
  • Documented experience and interest in managing and working with Big Data. 
  • Knowledge of the cholesterol metabolism, hypertension and their influence on cognition.
  • Experience in dementia research or clinical experience in dementia.
