Karolinska Institutet, Department of Neurobiology, Care Sciences and Society

The Department of Neurobiology, Care Sciences and Society (NVS) conducts world leading research in aging, dementia, epidemiology and care sciences. This research extends from basic molecular and cell levels to clinical research and societal studies. NVS educates almost a third of KI students at basic and advanced levels. The Department has approximately 540 employees and a revenue 2023 of 530 million SEK. It comprises seven divisions, located at Campus Flemingsberg and Campus Solna.

The Division of Clinical Geriatric, with over 100 employed and affiliated researchers are located both in Neo, Campus Flemingsberg and in the Q-building in Solna. We conduct research focusing on cognitive impairment, dementia, and other aging related disorders, and education, among other medical graduates. Our research is multi-faceted and is in close collaboration with leading institutions and clinics worldwide. The research is clinically oriented with an emphasis on diagnosis, prevention and treatment. The division has a close cooperation with the Medical Unit Aging within Theme Inflammation and Aging at Karolinska University Hospital.

About the research group and the project

The postdoctoral researcher will join a multidisciplinary research team of doctors, statisticians, engineers, and basic researcher working to detect the link between kidney disease and dementia; a new and important and until now fairly overlooked research area, with great clinical relevance.

Professor Maria Eriksdotter research group conducts registry research using the Swedish Registry for Cognitive and Dementia Disease (SveDem) (with over 110 000 patients) and other registries merged to SveDem. For this project SveDem is merged with the Stockholm Creatinine measurement (SCREAM) project and other registries to add information on kidney function and other laboratory biomarkers, all hospitalizations and diagnoses from outpatient specialist clinics, all prescribed medications, socioeconomics, long-term care for older individuals, and death and its causes.

Our datasets also include cerebrospinal fluid biomarkers, neuroimaging data and cognitive follow-ups measured with the Mini-Mental State Examination (>144 000 measures), functional outcomes such as nursing home placement or homecare, and mortality. We aim to explore the association between kidney disease and dementia, examing whether kidney disease increases the risk and progression for dementia and how dementia influences the occurrence and progression of kidney disease. Additionally, we seek to investigate treatment patterns targeting the cholinergic system to modify disease progression, including kidney outcomes, cognitive decline, and other adverse outcomes. The candidate will have the opportunity to develop their own projects with this data.

Your mission

We are looking for a candidate with a strong background in statistics both classic and advanced statistical methods.

Your duties will include independent management of large datasets, from data cleaning, data extraction, research protocol development, performing statistical analysis at an advanced level, article writing and driving research results through all stages of peer review until successful publication. Divulging results through participation in scientific congresses is also expected. Additionally, the postdoc is expected to collaborate and communicate with other members of the Eriksdotter research group, provide statistical support for different projects in our group and receive training in clinical aspects and the SveDem cohort.

Developing your own research projects is encouraged. A successful candidate has the ability to explain complex information to team members with different knowledge and/or academic backgrounds.
