- with focus on research
The Department of Medicine Huddinge (MedH), Karolinska Institutet (KI) is looking for a Professor of Hematology combined with a position at Karolinska University Hospital. With this recruitment, we want to strengthen the research in the subject of hematology at the department and ensure continuity within the department.
Haematology is a large and important clinical area within Karolinska University Hospital with a strong connection to both internal medicine and the field of cancer. Diseases include both benign, often genetic, diseases and various forms of blood cancer. The clinical part in Huddinge is home to the Nordic region's largest operations for acute myeloid leukaemia, myelodysplastic syndrome, myeloma, and allogeneic stem cell transplantation.
The rapid development of molecular cancer treatment in recent years, internationally and at KI, is largely based on research in hematological cancer. Precision medicine has its origins in haematology, especially the translational part, when hematological tumour cells were initially easier to access, and research compared to cancer cells from solid tumours in other organs. Hematological research and precision medicine at MedH are at the forefront of this development, and for some forms of leukaemia have been leading the way in identifying specific mutations and establishing new treatment principles based on this.
Within Flemingsberg's campus, the translational research tradition in haematology is strong and is conducted within the Center for Hematology and Regenerative Medicine (HERM). HERM currently houses 16 research groups in hematology, hematopoiesis, stem cell research, immunology and transfusion medicine and has worked actively to recruit and support younger researchers, and further recruitments are underway to strengthen the experimental part of hematology. HERM is in the Neo building in Flemingsberg, where four important core facilities are also housed: the MedH FACS facility, the single-cell sequencing facility SICOF, the genomics facility BEA and the imaging facility LCI. This provides excellent conditions for HERM's research groups to conduct high-quality research at the international forefront.
We intend to recruit a clinically active person with well-developed translational research activities at the international forefront for this professorship. You are expected to take a leading role in HERM's future development in translational hematological research. It is also important that you are an experienced teacher, as it is important that both undergraduate and postgraduate education are strengthened in this area. You are also expected to work to ensure that KI maintains and further develops its international network in the field.
