Do you want to contribute to top quality medical research?

The Department of Microbiology, Tumor and Cell Biology (MTC) at Karolinska Institutet conducts research and teaching within immunology, infection biology, cell biology and cancer. MTC have about 40 research groups and our key words are multidisciplinary, bridging, national and international collaborations.

The laboratory of Vicente Pelechano Garcia is located at the Science for Life Laboratory (SciLifeLab, http://www.scilifelab.se/) in the Karolinska Institute campus. SciLifeLab is equiped with state-of-the-art instrumentation and core facilities, and is home to one of the largest sequencing cluster in Europe.

Our group combines experimental and computational work and aims to develop and apply novel genome-wide techniques to address fundamental biological questions with medical implications (http://pelechanolab.com/). You will have the opportunity to work in a highly interdisciplinary and international environment and combine the development of state-of-the art genome-wide approaches with the molecular dissection of fundamental biological problems.

Are you interested in combining molecular biology and electronics to develop efficient point of care diagnostic methods? Would you like to develop cutting-edge genome-wide technologies for cancer patient stratification? Come and join us at SciLifeLab!

Your mission

The available postdoctoral position concerns developing and applying novel diagnostic tools for cancer patient and/or infectious diseases. Depending on the applicant’s background, the succesful candidate will focus on the development of improved clinical genomics methods to improve cancer patient stratification or on the development of novel point of care diagnostic devices for the detection of infectious diseases.

In the case of infectious diseases, the postdoc candidate will work on the area of electric detection of DNA nanoballs (Tayyab, Barrett et al. Sci Adv 2023). The candidate will perform original research in genomics, molecular biology and/or microfluidics. The candidate will acquire the required experimental and computational skills necessary for the completion of the project.

The successful candidate will take a strong lead in the experimental design and collaborate with other team members. The candidate is expected to communicate the scientific results by writing up scientific papers and attending scientific meetings. The ideal candidate is also expected to participate in the general duties of the team and to effectively communicate with scientists of very diverse backgrounds in a highly interdisciplinary and international environment. Working language is English.

  • The successful applicant should be experienced on the development of novel molecular approaches aimed to the identification of microorganism or cancer mutations (R&D).
  • Previous experience on the either microfluidics, pathogen detection or NGS are essential.
  • Experience in infectious diseases, clinical microbiology or cancer genomics will be highly considered.
  • A strong interest in interdisciplinary technology development, and novel and creative thinking abilities are essential.
  • Good interpersonal skills and ability to work in teams is essential.

Additional skills that are especially meritorious for the position:

  • Preferred experience includes familiarity with DNA amplification technologies, microfluidics, bioinformatics, NGS data analysis and/or electronics.
