Description of the subject area

The Department of Medicine Solna (MedS) has a well-established and internationally highly ranked education and research within the fields of biomedicine and clinical medicine. Endocrinology is an important specialty within the field of internal medicine with a constant need of research development and education for medical students. Autoimmune endocrine disorders constitute a major cornerstone of endocrinology, not the least due to the strong connection between the most common of these disorders. The increasing use of immunotherapy, especially within oncology, can be complicated by development of several autoimmune endocrine disorders which further emphasizes the need for research within this field.

Your mission

We are looking for a professor that is interested in leading and developing our education with focus on clinical medicine for medical students. You should be deeply engaged in educational activities in clinical medicine and conduct active and successful research at a high international level.

You will lead and develop medical education in clinical medicine at high quality, in collaboration with other programs and courses at the university and with hospitals within the region. You will also conduct research and clinical work in autoimmune endocrine disorders. The research will include both experimental and register-based studies as our infrastructure is built on those components.

The professorship will be combined with an employment as at least a specialized trained physician in endocrinology at the Karolinska University Hospital. The employment amounts to 70 percent at MedS and 30 percent at the ME Endokrinologi, Tema Inflammation och Åldrande, Karolinska University Hospital.

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible for an employment as Professor with focus on education and research you must have demonstrated excellent pedagogical expertise; good scientific expertise; and good clinical expertise. (See the instructions regarding the Appointment Procedure for Teachers at Karolinska Institutet). 

You must have experience in teaching and as an organizer within the programme for medical students. You further need to have a broad knowledge in different pedagogical approaches as well as of organization of novel courses. This includes good knowledge of budget planning and administration. You must also lead a successful research team within autoimmune endocrine disorders as well as being an active supervisor for PhD students. 

You shall also have completed 10 weeks of courses on teaching in higher education (or have equivalent competence), as indicated in the recommendations of the Association of Swedish Higher Education Institution.

The employment will be combined with an employment as specialist physician, assistant chief physician or chief physician in endocrinology at the Karolinska University Hospital and therefore the candidate must have a Swedish MD with specialist competence in endocrinology, as well as fulfill the National Board of Health and Welfare's requirements for practicing medicine in Sweden.

Since the position includes clinical work, the successful applicant must, besides English, demonstrate proficiency in Swedish, Norwegian or Danish (C1 level according to the common European reference scale (CERS).

Assessment criteria

The Professorship has a focus on education and research. The assessment will weight qualifications as follows: scientific expertise (2), pedagogical expertise (3), leadership, development, and collaboration expertise (2) and clinical expertise (2).
