Karolinska Institutet, Department of Medicine, Huddinge

- with focus on research

Do you want to contribute to top quality medical research?

We are looking for a professor to lead and develop RNA research in the field of hematology. Analysis of RNA has great potential as a complement to DNA diagnostics in clinical medicine. Hematology is at the forefront of this development and this recruitment is a strategic investment in this area.

Description of the subject area

Hematology is a large and successful research area at Karolinska Institutet. Huddinge is home to the largest clinical operations in the Nordic countries for the most common haematological diseases, as well as to Karolinska University Hospital's stem cell transplantation activities. Methodological developments now enable point-of-care gene analyses in real time, and the molecular understanding of hematological cancer has reached new levels. However, many leukemias are linked to disrupted regulatory systems above and downstream of the genes themselves, i.e. those that code for RNA and protein. After years of advances in DNA sequencing, RNA biology and RNA translation can soon be added to the technical platform. The Department of Medicine Huddinge (MedH) therefore wants to strengthen the molecular competence in hematology by recruiting a professor with expertise in RNA biology and with a pronounced interest in translational research. Professor will represent a scientific node at the Center for Hematology and Regenerative Medicine (HERM) and be a key collaborator with clinical researchers.

Your mission

The position is part of a strategic initiative aimed at strengthening research activities in the field of RNA biology at MedH. The holder of this professorship is expected to conduct research at the highest international level in the research field. The assignment includes leading and developing own research, but also working to start new clinical collaboration projects. The successful candidate is expected to take the initiative to ensure effective utilization of research results and outreach activities to strengthen collaboration in the field of RNA biology across KI. In accordance with the department's MedH 2025 strategy, all professors are expected to teach and actively contribute to undergraduate and postgraduate education.

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible for employment as professor with focus on research the applicant must have demonstrated good pedagogical expertise and excellent scientific expertise. The following qualifications are a requirement for the position.

  • Successful leadership of own research group, including main supervision for PhD students and postdocs, for several years.

Assessment criteria

The Professorship has a focus on research. The assessment will weigh qualifications as follows: scientific expertise (3), pedagogical expertise (2), leadership, development and collaboration expertise (1).

For employment as Professor at Karolinska Institutet, the eligibility requirements and assessment criteria stated in the Instructions regarding the Appointment Procedure are applied in relation to established profile of employment.

It is particularly meritorious that the applicant has shown

  • Strong scientific activity, in particular regarding the last eight years.
  • Internationally competitive research in the field of RNA biology with hematological focus.
  • Success in recruiting prestigious research grants over a longer period of time in national competition and/or international competition where projects have undergone peer-review.
  • Active teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
  • Successful collaborations with other research groups, especially those with a clinical profile.

The applicant shall also have completed 10 weeks of courses on teaching in higher education (or have equivalent competence), as indicated in the recommendations of the Association of Swedish Higher Education Institution. If the person appointed for the position is lacking such education at the time of the employment, the appointee must undergo such education during the first two years of employment.

After an overall assessment of the expertise and merits of the applicants in relation to the subject area, Karolinska Institutet will determine which of them has the best potential to contribute to a positive development of the activities at KI.
