Do you want to contribute to top quality medical research?

The Department of Laboratory Medicine is searching for a post-doctoral fellow to join the Uwe Tietge research group at the Division of Clinical Chemistry to study the role of macrophages in cardiometabolic disease.

Your mission

Cardiometabolic disease is to a large part underlying the vast increase in non-communicable diseases observed in recent years. Particularly relevant for the current project are the components non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD)/steatohepatitis (NASH) and atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease. Macrophages integrate metabolic and immune responses and thus represent key effector cells for these pathophysiologies.

In the present project, the impact of signal transduction pathways controlling central checkpoints of metabolism on NAFLD/NASH and atherosclerosis will be explored in experiments spanning from cell culture to in vivo models of disease (including bone marrow transplantation and gene transfer with recombinant viral vectors). CRISPR/Cas9 knockout screens and RNA sequencing will be carried out with the aim to discover and map novel signal transduction pathways. These approaches are complemented with lipid biochemistry and mass spectrometry determinations of changes in metabolites.

Your profile

To qualify, the applicant should have a background in biomedical sciences with interest- and experience in the work with cell culture as well as with preclinical animal models. Specifically, experience with in vivo studies in disease models is an advantage. Ideally, the candidate should have prior knowledge in bioinformatics (working with large data sets as e.g. generated by RNA sequencing), metabolism, macrophage (patho)physiology, (primary) cell culture, molecular biology, work with recombinant gene transfer vectors, radioactive substances, flow cytometry, mouse bone marrow transplantation and microsurgery. In addition, extensive knowledge of general laboratory techniques such as cloning and qPCR and experience with the CRISPR/Cas9 system is desirable.

We are looking for a highly motivated, structured, enthusiastic and scientifically driven candidate interested in exploring the molecular basis of (immuno)metabolism. The person should exhibit a high degree of independence but on the other hand also value a collaborative approach to science and enjoy working in a team. Good proficiency in English, both oral and written is required.

To be eligible for employment as a postdoctor a doctoral degree or a foreign degree deemed to be equivalent to a doctoral degree is required. This eligibility requirement must be fulfilled at the latest at the time of the employment decision. It is considered as an advantage if you have completed your doctoral degree within the last three years, if there are special reasons, your degree may have been completed earlier.
