The Department of Clinical Neuroscience (CNS) conducts research and education in the field of neuroscience from the molecular level to the society level. The clinical research and education are conducted in collaboration with other research groups from the Karolinska Institutet, with other universities as well as Region Stockholm.

Description of the subject area

The subject area for the professorship is vision science with a focus on ocular neurobiology. Vision science is a broad research area which covers mechanisms of visual perception, mechanisms of visual function / visual neuroscience, and mechanisms of health and disease in the eye. The purpose of this recruitment is to strengthen the neurobiology areas of the field with special focus on ocular neurodegeneration.

The establishment of the professorship is financed by a donation from the Ulla and Ingemar Dahlberg Foundation.

Your mission

The Department of Clinical Neuroscience with its division of Eye and Vision has an extensive and very successful line of research in the field of vision science. The Division of Eye and Vision has a comprehensive assignment in education and is responsible for the ophthalmology training for medical students, optometry students and several other educations such as ophthalmic nurses. The education is performed both at undergraduate and advanced level. With the recruitment of a professor, the Department now wishes to maintain and develop its scientific and educational position in the field of neurobiology.

The Professor will conduct research and education (at undergraduate, advanced and doctoral level) within the division and different programs at the department with focus on ocular neurobiology. The holder shall promote research in the area of vision science through actions in research as well as participating in international cooperation. The professor is also expected to establish networks and collaborations (basic, translational, and clinical in nature) with other groups at the division, department, at KI, nationally and internationally, as well as outreach to the general society.

The Professorwill be expected to run a diverse group of basic and translational scientists with an aim to discover neurodegenerative mechanisms and develop neuro-protective/neuro-regenerative strategies for diseases, for example glaucoma, using technologies such as omics techniques, neurobiological testing, and high-resolution microscopy in animal/tissue/cell models

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible for an employment as Professor with focus on research the applicant must have demonstrated good pedagogical expertise and excellent scientific expertise (See the instructions regarding the Appointment Procedure for Teachers at Karolinska Institutet).

The applicant must be an independent researcher with extensive background in visual neurobiology. Practical experience of and teaching experience in animal husbandry, mics data generation, ocular surgery and retinal electrophysiology is required. The applicant will be expected to interact and work in an international environment with multidisciplinary basic research scientists, clinicians, and research clinicians. Therefore, documentation of translational activities such as collaborations with clinicians, activity in clinical trials, working with industry, and innovation, is required.

The applicant shall also have completed 10 weeks of courses on teaching in higher education (or have equivalent competence), as indicated in the recommendations of the Association of Swedish Higher Education Institution.

Assessment criteria

The Professorship has a focus on research. The assessment will weight qualifications as follows: scientific expertise (3), pedagogical expertise (2) and leadership, development and collaboration expertise (2).

For employment as Professor at Karolinska Institutet, the eligibility requirements and assessment criteria stated in the Instructions regarding the Appointment Procedure 3.1.1 are applied in relation to established profile of employment.

It is particularly meritorious that the applicant has shown

• experience in basic and translational research within neurobiology with a specific focus on ocular neurodegeneration (for example glaucoma).
• experience in drug trails within ocular medicine.

It is meritorious that the applicant has experience of supervising PhD students and postdocs within the area of ocular neurobiology/neurodegeneration.

After an overall assessment of the expertise and merits of the applicants in relation to the subject area, Karolinska Institutet will determine which of them has the best potential to contribute to a positive development of the activities at KI.
