Do you want to contribute to top quality medical research?

The Department of Microbiology, Tumor and Cell Biology (MTC) at Karolinska Institutet conducts research and teaching within immunology, infection biology, cell biology and cancer. MTC have about 40 research groups and our key words are multidisciplinary, bridging, national and international collaborations.

The behavior and physiology of microorganisms significantly determines the fate of the infection. Thereby, biofilm formation of microorganisms is a major cause of chronic infections and significantly contributes to the emergence and spread of antimicrobial resistance. Therefore, you are the right applicant for this position, if you like to work on the molecular basis of a challenging and important clinical problem with up to date experimental approaches to create novel knowledge at the forefront of the research field.

Description of the subject area

Microbial biofilm formation is a major cause of chronic infection in all relevant microorganisms. Biofilm formation, the sessile mode of growth, is positively regulated by cyclic di-GMP signaling in bacteria. As one subject area, the Ute Römling group has (re)discovered cyclic di-GMP in 2004 and is currently studying cyclic di-nucleotide signaling in the context of the physiology of the gastrointestinal pathogen Salmonella typhimurium and the evolution of cyclic di-GMP signaling with relevant examples from throughout the phylogenetic tree.

Your mission

As a research specialist, you will be responsible to contribute to the ongoing research in the research group equally as developing own and novel lines of research in theory and practice. You will be working primarily with Salmonella typhimurium as the model organism and the role of cyclic di-GMP signaling in biofilm formation, motility and virulence. You are, however, expected to flexibly apply similar research questions to other model organisms. You are also expected to set up novel experimental approaches to effectively answer the posed research questions within the research group and in collaboration. The preparation of scientific publications is expected. Active participation in scientific meetings on all levels is another requirement.

Working language is English.

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible for employment as a Research Specialist, in addition to holding a Degree of Doctor, PhD, or having equivalent scientific expertise, the applicant must have demonstrated research expertise as well as have documented research experience after defending their doctoral dissertation.

Assessment criteria

In addition to the aforementioned requirements, the applicant must show:

  • Demonstrated ability to successfully work on and organize independently a given or self-chosen research project practically and theoretically
  • Demonstrate ability to successfully supervise junior researchers and guide peers in research questions
  • Demonstrate ability to author and initiate scientific articles
  • Demonstrate ability to manage larger scientific constellations
  • Demonstrate ability to work in interdisciplinary teams
  • Experience in molecular (micro)biology techniques in different microorganisms
  • Experience in basic bioinformatic techniques
  • Fluency in written and spoken (scientific) English
  • Excellent communication skills

It is meritorious that the applicant show:

  • Theoretical and practical experience to work with microbial biofilms
  • Theoretical and practical experience to work with cyclic di-nucleotide second messenger signalling

After an overall assessment of the expertise and merits of the applicants in relation to the subject area, Karolinska Institutet will determine which of them has the best potential to contribute to a positive development of the activities at KI.
