Do you want to contribute to top quality medical research?

The Department of Microbiology, Tumor and Cell Biology (MTC) at Karolinska Institutet conducts research and teaching within immunology, infection biology, cell biology and cancer. MTC has about 40 research groups and our key words are multidisciplinary, bridging, national and international collaborations.

MTC is looking for a Research Assistant to join Professor Gunilla Karlsson Hedestam's group to contribute to the group's project concerning the analysis of immune repertoires and variation in adaptive immune receptor genes through Next Generation Sequencing (NGS). The group's goal is to increase our understanding of how genetic backgrounds influence the diversity and function of adaptive immune responses. We are looking for a motivated, independent, and well-organized person with excellent communication skills in spoken and written English. The appointment is for a purely computational scientist. It will not involve any wet lab work.

Your mission

Modern immunology research generates large datasets from high-throughput sequencing techniques. The Karlsson Hedestam group analyzes highly diverse adaptive immune receptor repertoires and studies the role of germline-encoded polymorphism for antigen-specific responses. Having developed the computational tool IgDiscover to process such datasets, the group is now seeking to expand its analytic support. Specifically, the group is looking for an experienced computational scientist to contribute to data analysis, statistics, and visualization for several ongoing research projects.

Your profile

The successful candidate will have at least 5 years’ experience working with data analysis and bioinformatic analysis. The candidate should be proficient in English and in relevant programming languages, have data science skills (data cleaning, scripting, visualization, etc) and an ability to work in a multidisciplinary research environment. The individual should be highly driven and motivated to solve problems, as well as be able to work independently while also being able to communicate effectively with other members of the team. A selection will be made among qualified applicants using the following bases of assessment:

  • Strong mathematical and computer science background
  • Deep knowledge of probability theory, statistics, and statistical modeling
  • Ability to apply statistical expertise to problem solving on experimental data
  • Software engineering experience, including knowledge of Python, R, and bash as well as experience with Github or related resources
  • Experience of working in a Linux environment and HPC computing
  • Documented experience in working with analysis of adaptive immune receptor repertoires
