The department of clinical sciences, Danderyd hospital (KI DS) was established in its current form 1993. Annually, about 400 students undergo their basic medical training at KI DS. The department conducts clinical research in several different areas. The department has about 90 registered PhD students and annually about 10 defend their dissertations for a doctoral degree in medicine. Approximately 250-300 articles are published annually in international peer-review journals. Extensive commissioned research is also ongoing. The department annually provides several courses for specialist competence in various subjects as well as further education courses for specialists and postgraduate courses.

The Operational Area of Anesthesia and Intensive Care consists of four surgical departments in surgery/urology, orthopedics, gynecology/obstetrics, day surgery, as well as ENT and dental anesthesia and external operations, the operational area of postoperative care, intensive care unit (ICU), pain clinic, National Respiratory Center (NRC) and sterile technology. The Operational Area has about 400 employees and annually performs approximately 24,000 anesthetics in about 25 operating theaters. Clinical research, development, and education are also important parts of the mission.

Your mission

The employment has a focus on research. The department of anesthesia and intensive care at Danderyd hospital has several research supervisors, PhD students and a research unit under development.

The department now wants to recruit a new senior lecturer who will lead and continue to develop the research, especially in sepsis research, and teach anesthesia and intensive care at Danderyd hospital. The holder of the position will lead the USV unit at the department of anesthesia and intensive care. The position is intended to be divided as 51% employment at Karolinska Institutet as a senior lecturer, and 49% as a specialist trained physician in anesthesia and intensive care at Danderyd  hospital.

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible for employment as a senior lecturer, in addition to holding a Degree of Doctor, PhD, or having equivalent scientific expertise, the person must have demonstrated good pedagogical expertise, excellent scientific expertise, as well as management, development and collaborative skills and clinical expertise (See the instructions regarding the Appointment Procedure for Teachers at Karolinska Institutet).

The applicant must have experience of clinical research, clinical teaching within medical programs,clinical work and supervision of PhD students.

The position will be combined with a position as a specialist trained physician in anesthesia and intensive care at Danderyd hospital and therefore the candidate must have an MD with specialist competence in anesthesia and intensive care,as well as fulfill the National Board of Health and Welfare's requirements for practicing medicine in Sweden.

Since the employment requires collaboration with other hospitals in the county, the holder must have documented experience of collaboration between different hospitals and to lead research activities.

Since the employment includes patient contact the applicant must, besides English, demonstrate proficiency in Swedish, Norwegian or Danish corresponding to the C1 level according to the common European reference scale (CERS).

Assessment criteria 

The Senior Lectureship has a focus on research. The assessment will weight qualifications as follows: scientific expertise (3), pedagogical expertise (2), leadership, development, and collaboration expertise (2), and clinical expertise (2).

It is particularly meritorious with experience in clinical research in the area of sepsis. It is also meritorious to be part of national and international networks and have experience from leading clinical multicenter studies.

For employment as Senior Lecturer at Karolinska Institutet, the eligibility requirements and assessment criteria stated in the Instructions regarding the Appointment Procedure are applied in relation to established profile of employment.

The applicant shall also have completed courses of 10 weeks of higher education training in teaching or have equivalent competence in accordance with the Association of Swedish Higher Education Institutions recommendations for qualification as a higher education teacher. If the person appointed for the position is lacking such education at the time of the employment, the appointee must undergo such education during the first two years of employment.

After an overall assessment of the expertise and merits of the candidates, Karolinska Institutet will judge which of the candidates that have the best potential to contribute to a positive development of the activities at KI.
