The Department of Laboratory Medicine at Karolinska Instutet comprises seven divisions actively involved in a wide range of research and teaching activities, including advanced and basic research, clinical and epidemiological research. In close collaboration with the sevarl hospitals’ clinics, the department plays a key role in facilitating the transfer of medical knowledge between academia, healthcare, and industry. Volkan Özenci's research group specialises in the development and evaluation of diagnostic methods in clinical microbiology, participating in and conducting large clinical studies in clinical microbiology. In fact, a recent survey revealed that the rapid diagnostic method they previously developed for identifying microorganisms from blood culture bottles has been widely adopted in 40% of university laboratories in Europe.

Your mission

The work entails developing, validating, and verifying diagnostic methods through ex-vivo and in-vitro studies, focusing on clinical mycology and collecting clinical strains for research. The primary responsibilities involve microbiological diagnostics of severe infectious fungal diseases, such as candidemia, including sample collection and clinical validation of methods (particularly direct identification and determination of fungal pathogen resistance). It also encompasses method development, quality assurance, and processing and analysis of research data in clinical mycology. The position is full-time, offered as a special fixed-term employment for approximately six months with a potential 12-month extension, and may involve additional administrative tasks like inventory management, registration, and labelling.

Your profile

Requirements to be fulfilled for the position include having education or work experience in the field of medicine, biomedical analysis, or an equivalent discipline. Additionally, the candidate should possess experience in post-graduate education and research, with a specific focus on the identification of fungi using molecular diagnostic methods and the determination of fungal resistance utilizing various techniques, including the EUCAST reference method. Previous clinical experience in a microbiology laboratory is highly desirable. It is essential to have a high level of proficiency in both spoken and written English. Furthermore, the ideal candidate should demonstrate strong personal qualities such as a service-oriented mindset, a positive attitude, excellent cooperation skills, and effective communication skills. The role will involve daily interaction with personnel from diverse categories. We will place great emphasis on personal qualities and personal suitability.
