The Department of Laboratory Medicine consists of seven departments within which both research and teaching are conducted. The department is involved in advanced research in both basic and applied research. All departments operate in close contact with clinics at Karolinska University Hospital. The department's educational activities contribute to the majority of programs and courses within KI's total educational offering.

Your mission

Prof. Björnstedt lab at Karolinska Institute is seeking a postdoctoral research fellow for studying selenium compounds as cancer therapeutics.Our lab carries out translational and clinical studies focusing on redox-active selenium compounds as chemotherapeutic treatment for cancer. Areas of interest include a) clinical studies to study pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics, safety, and efficacy of selenium compounds in the treatment of cancer. b) Mechanistic studies to study new selenium compounds and how the effect of selenium compounds can be improved through the combination of treatments. c) Mechanistic studies focused on drug action and how selenium compounds perform their cytotoxic action.

Primary duties included in the role are:

  • Managing your own research projects
  • Teaching and supervision of junior staff, students
  • Writing and publishing of scientific articles

The successful candidate will join an interdisciplinary research group working closely with clinical departments and other national and international research groups, why experience in a similar field is an advantage during selection.

Your profile

Qualified to be employed as a postdoctor is one who has obtained a doctorate or has equivalent scientific competence. Applicants who have not completed a doctorate at the end of the application period may also apply, provided that all requirements for a completed degree are met before the (intended) date of employment. This must be substantiated by the applicant's main supervisor, director or equivalent.

Obligatory Requirements:

  1. Ph.D. with a strong background in medical biotechnology, pathology and cancer therapeutics.
  2. Significant expertise in working with selenium compounds, molecular biological techniques, transcriptomics, flow cytometry, enzyme kinetics, protein expression and purification, cell death assays, and antiproliferation studies.
  3. Prior knowledge in lipid nano particles is an advantage.
  4. Experience within the field of ex-vivo models.
  5. Experience within the field of IHC is an advantage.
  6. Evidence of productivity from publications in peer-reviewed journals originating from Ph.D. or postdoctoral work.
  7. Candidates must be fluent in spoken and written English.
  8. Excellent collaborative skills, self-motivation, and creativity.
