The Department of Medical Epidemiology and Biostatistics conducts research in epidemiology and biostatistics across a broad range of areas within biomedical science. The department is among the largest of its type in Europe and has especially strong research profiles in psychiatric, cancer, reproductive, pediatric, pharmaco, genetic, and geriatric epidemiology, eating disorders, precision medicine, and biostatistics.

The research group, located at the Department of Medical Epidemiology and Biostatistics, Karolinska Institutet, is dedicated to understanding the etiology of psykiatric disorders, especially neurodevelopmental disorders, and their links to preterm birth. A second aim in our research focus is women's health, with focus of psychiatric outcomes, e.g. hos social isolation and social functioning affects future health.

Your mission

The research program aims specifically to gain a comprehensive understanding of how prenatal risk factors impact the risk of neurodevelopmental disorders with focus on preterm birth and autism, the underlying determinants and related health consequences. You will participate in a study how social isolation affects the health of individuals with schizophrenia. We are using epidemiological data from the Nordic countries as well as a longitudinal cohort study of approximately 50,000 women on lifestyle factors and medical conditions, applying modern statistical methods for life-course epidemiological analyses. The position is 2 years.

Your profile

To be eligible for employment as a postdoctor a doctoral degree or a foreign degree deemed to be equivalent to a doctoral degree is required. This eligibility requirement must be fulfilled at the latest at the time of the employment decision. It is considered as an advantage if you have completed your doctoral degree within the last three years, if there are special reasons, your degree may have been completed earlier.

Applicants should have a doctor degree in medicine or epidemiology, and have ample experience in analyzing longitudinal cohort studies and performing large-scale data analysis using standard statistical software (SAS, R, Stata). SAS is our primary work horse for data management and statistical analyses, and is a requirement, but Stata and R is an advantage. You should have a documented experience in survival analyses (e.g., Cox and Poisson regressions), including various methods to deal with confounding, modification and mediation, and in analyzing register based family data. Knowledge and experience in heritability studies is an advantage. You should have relevant knowledge in women’s and children’s health, preferably pre-/perinatal factors and neuropsychiatric disorders. A track record in writing scientific publications in English (peer-reviewed) is required, and publications in high-impact journals is a merit. International research experience is preferred.

The applicant should be highly collegial, experienced in working in multidisciplinary context, possess exceptional communication and organizational skills, and know how to successfully multitask. Swedish language and knowledge about the health systems and recording of national data in the Nordic countries is beneficial. Direct experience in working with Swedish register data is a requirement, i.e. the Swedish Medical Birth Register, Patient register and the Multi-generation register and others.
