The Department of Women’s and Children’s Health and, in particular, the Division of Paediatric Oncology and Paediatric Surgery performs research aiming to improve the survival, quality of life, care and treatment of children and adolescents with cancer or haematological diseases. Located in the Solna Campus, it offers an excellent international environment, favouring professional development and networking. Professor Blomgren leads a multidisciplinary group using state-of-the-art multilevel approaches to study the effects of cranial radiotherapy on the juvenile brain.

Your mission

The successful candidate will study the effects of radiation on the population of neural stem and progenitor cells located outside the neurogenic area of the hippocampus. The position encompasses animal work, including whole brain irradiation, transcardial perfusion and brain collection, and laboratory work, namely brain slicing and processing for free-floating immunohistochemistry and confocal microscopy.

Your profile

We are looking for a motivated and enthusiastic candidate with previous experience in animal handling, immunohistochemistry and confocal microscopy. Priority will be given to candidates with the following qualifications:

  • - MSc graduate (Biomedicine/Toxicology/Neuroscience);
  • - LAS/Felasa certification Functions A, C and D;
  • - Certification in radiation protection and experience in animal irradiation;
  • - Experience in mice transcardial perfusion and brain collection;
  • - Experience in free-floating immunohistochemistry;
  • - Experience in confocal microscopy, particularly in acquiring z-stack multi-tiled images;
  • - Experience working with the Zen software for the post-acquisition processing of confocal images;
  • - Knowledge in relevant areas, e.g., radiation biology, brain development, paediatric neuro-oncology;
  • - Good knowledge of biostatistics;
  • - Good interpersonal skills and the ability to work independently;
  • - Good knowledge of spoken and written English and good communication skills.
