Do you want to contribute to top quality medical research?

CMB is a department with a strong focus on basic science. The research groups are organized in three thematic programs: Developmental and Stem Cell Biology, Cell Biology and Infection and Cancer. CMB conducts research and education in cell biology, molecular biology, developmental biology, stem cell biology, cancer and infection biology. A research assistant position is available in the research group of Professor Kenneth Chien. The team consists of scientists who are focused on studying cardiogenesis in multiple model organisms and its implications for regenerative medicine. The research goal is to find novel pathways and principles for regenerative medicine in general and to repair damaged cardiac muscle cells in particular. The position is time limited.

Duties

Your main priority will be to model tight-junction mediated changes in cell and tissue scale forces during heart regeneration and develop an organ-on-a-chip model to study heart disease. Duties include establishing a microfluidic chip platform for culturing cardiac organoids, assisting the team in tissue processing and cryosectioning, immunofluorescence staining, electrophysiological assays, live imaging and computational modelling of cell and tissue level forces. Depending on the project progress you will be expected to learn and apply new techniques. The working language in the lab is English.

Entry requirements

A suitable background is a bachelor’s degree in medical engineering. You must have documented experience working in the cardiovascular research field. Previous experience of working with cell and tissue culture and modelling cardiac tissue is necessary. You must have a good understanding of basic molecular biology techniques as well as a strong background in engineering. Proof of experience in data analysis in MATLAB, design of cardiovascular medical devices and 3D printing is meriting.

Skills and personal qualities

You are thorough, diligent and used to documenting and organizing your work. You work in a clean and precise way. We expect you to be a positive, flexible person with good communication skills who appreciates being in a highly dynamic international research team.
