Karolinska Institutet, Department of Physiology and Pharmacology

- with focus on research

Do you want to contribute to top quality medical research?

The Department of Physiology and Pharmacology (FyFa) conducts education and research in physiology, pharmacology, anesthesiology, and intensive care at a very high international level. The department has around 400 employees, 30 research groups, and 75 doctoral students. We offer a dynamic research and teaching environment in newly renovated facilities in the newly constructed Biomedicum on Campus Solna, which is linked to corresponding clinical teaching and research environments at the Department of Perioperative Medicine and Intensive Care at Karolinska University Hospital. Research activities at the department include areas such as anesthesiology and intensive care, cardiovascular and respiratory systems, neuropsychopharmacology, neuroinflammation, cellular signaling, pharmacogenetics, regenerative medicine, renal physiology, muscle physiology, and pain. Collaboration between preclinical and clinical researchers at Karolinska University Hospital provides unique opportunities for translational research in our subjects.

Description of the subject area

Anesthesiology and Intensive Care Medicine is a combined academic and clinical field that also constitutes a medical specialty covering the clinical activities of perioperative medicine and intensive care. The subject area is dominated by applied physiology and pharmacology and has for several decades had its academic development closely linked to the Department of Physiology and Pharmacology. The Section of Anesthesiology and Intensive Care Medicine at the Department of Physiology and Pharmacology was established in 2005 and conducts internationally leading research and education primarily in anesthesiology and intensive care medicine. The academic activities are closely coordinated with Region Stockholm's health care in perioperative medicine and intensive care and for more than 15 years have been an integrated part of the anesthesia, surgery, and intensive care activities at Karolinska University Hospital in Solna. The clinical activities in anesthesiology and intensive care medicine at Karolinska University Hospital are organized in a hospital-wide unit called Function Perioperative Medicine and Intensive Care (PMI), to which the majority of the clinical researchers and teachers at the Department are affiliated.

A research platform consisting of an experimental unit, a unit for clinical research, and a unit for outcome and epidemiology has been established with joint funding from Karolinska Institutet and the Region. Function PMI has also contributed strategic funds to strengthen the infrastructure for epidemiological research in anesthesiology and intensive care medicine in order to utilize broad and large internal patient cohorts based on over 35,000 annual operations and about 3,000 intensive care admissions annually. Competence in outcome and epidemiological research is an integrated part of the clinical research and constitutes a central and very active part of the intensive care research within the Section.
