The Department of Microbiology, Tumor and Cell Biology (MTC) at Karolinska Institutet conducts research and teaching within immunology, infection biology, cell biology and cancer. MTC have about 40 research groups and our key words are multidisciplinary, bridging, national and international collaborations.

Description of the subject area

We are seeking a highly motivated candidate who has strong expertise in microbiota and related research, as well as previous research experience and documented expertise in all of the following areas: 1) Vaginal microbiome and human papillomavirus-related infections and cancer development, especially through translational studies in collaboration with clinics. 2) Gut microbiome and pathogenic interactions with 3D models. 3) Bacterial phage isolation and phage therapy. 4) Genetic editing of pathogens and their relation to host responses.

Your mission

The focus of the position is on phage therapy and microbiota in women’s health. The candidate is expected to play a leading role in generating scientific hypotheses, conducting experiments, analyzing data, preparing presentations of results and manuscripts. The candidate should also be able to supervise students and work independently. The candidate will work on several projects related to microbiota in women's health, as well as on gut microbiota and fighting against antibiotic-resistant pathogens. These projects involve a range of microbiology and molecular biology techniques, including bacterial phage experiments, microbiota culture and analysis, and research related to infections and women's health.

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible for employment as a Principal Researcher, in addition to holding a Degree of Doctor, PhD, or having equivalent scientific expertise, the applicant must have demonstrated research expertise. The applicant must also be a Research Leader and have established their own line of research. The applicant should furthermore have shown documented, high-quality scientific production, particularly in the last six years and have the potential to energetically drive their research forward as well as be recognized nationally and internationally. The applicant should also have obtained good, long-term and preferably external funding and have the potential to obtain further external funding.  The applicant should have shown teaching and supervision experience and demonstrated good leadership qualities.

Assessment criteria

It is particularly meritorious that the applicant has shown

  • An independent line of research.
  • Documented expertise related to all of the subject areas listed above.
  • Publication of several original scientific articles as the lead author.
  • Supervision of bachelor's, master's, and PhD-level students, as well as postdoctoral research fellows.
  • Ability to supervise a PhD student until graduation.
  • Certification as a Docent.
  • Proof of organizing master's and PhD-level courses or projects.
  • Availability of external funding, such as a Vetenskapsrådet (VR) starting grant or international grants.

It is meritorious that the applicant has shown

  •   Been invited as speaker for conferences both nationally and internationally. 

After an overall assessment of the expertise and merits of the applicants in relation to the subject area, Karolinska Institutet will determine which of them has the best potential to contribute to a positive development of the activities at KI.
