The Department of Medical Epidemiology and Biostatistics (MEB) is among the largest departments of epidemiology in Europe with special focus on increasing our knowledge of the aetiology of different diseases. Our department consists of researchers, doctoral students, biostatisticians, health economists, data collectors and database administrators as well as administrative personnel, in total some 250 staff. To be a research assistant means to devote oneself to several research projects under supervision of experienced researchers and following scheduled work plans.

The research group

A research assistant position is available within the biostatistics group at MEB. The biostatistics group at MEB, KI comprises 5 professors, 3 senior lecturers, 9 PhD-level statisticians, 4 masters-level statisticians, 2 postdocs, 1 health economist and 15 doctoral students. The group is involved in a wide variety of research projects, including survival analysis and multi-state models, family studies, precision medicine. Relevant to this position, the biostatistics group also supports the development and application of methods for health economic evaluations, particularly for cancer screening and treatment.

Your mission

The research assistant project and the duties of the research assistant

According to the latest recommendations from the European Union, union members are recommended to consider screening for prostate cancer with pilot projects using magnetic resonance imaging with additional consideration of reflex tests. The confederation of cancer research centers has initiated the Organised Prostate cancer Testing (OPT) program in Sweden and several regions have implemented pilot projects since 2020. In line with the Swedish Consortium of Research for Prostate Cancer Testing (SCROPT) working group (WG) Health Economics, our group is looking for a research assistant who can support planning and conducting research projects.

The potential projects that the research assistant could support include (1) measuring health-related quality of life for prostate cancer patients, (2) extending a microsimulation model for prostate cancer screening, (3) a cost-effectiveness analysis of OPT and (4) a budget impact analysis. The successful applicant will work with Mark Clements (Senior Lecturer in Biostatistics) and Shuang Hao (Health Economist). The candidate will also have opportunities to work with other KI researchers and researchers from other regions.

General requirement, skills and personal qualities

This is multi-discipline position. We are looking for a candidate that shares the passion of research, who is highly motivated to work both independently and efficiently under supervision and has curiosity and ability to learn.

Required

  • have been awarded a second-cycle/advanced/master qualification (i.e. master degree), or expect to be awarded a second-cycle/advanced/master qualification in the summer 2023
  • have a strong background in biostatistics/mathematics and/or health economics and/or epidemiology
  • strong knowledge in health economic modeling
  • strong knowledge in biostatistics/statistics
  • programming, preferably using C++ and/or R
  • have undertaken relevant applied studies or project work
  • excellent oral and written communication skills in English

Merit

  • Candidates who have a medical background will be well ranked
  • The candidate is expected to understand Swedish or is actively learning Swedish as the projects are of high policy relevance

Terms and conditions

The research assistant will be employed for 1 year full-time, with the possibility of an extension.
