The position is placed in the Epidemiology and Public Health Intervention Research (EPHIR) group at the department of Global Public Health. Within our research group you will have the opportunity to work together with an interdisciplinary team of researchers within the area of epidemiology and intervention research. Your mission

We are looking for a person who will conduct research in the fields of public health, cardiovascular and geriatric epidemiology with a focus on life course studies. The holder of the position is expected to independently initiate, develop, and lead new research lines within public health science and be the responsible for their scientific reporting. The research will be based on large-scale register linkages as well as self-reported public health data. The position includes being responsible for the development, management, and analysis of databases, therefore experience in linking large databases and advanced statistical methods is essential. The position also includes course leader responsibility and teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate level. It is also expected that the holder of the position will supervise undergraduate and postgraduate students and drive national and international collaborations involving research grant applications.

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible for employment as a Principal Researcher, in addition to holding a Degree of Doctor, PhD, or having equivalent scientific expertise, the applicant must have demonstrated research expertise. The applicant must also be a Research Leader and have established their own line of research. The applicant should furthermore have shown documented, high-quality scientific production, particularly in the last six years and have the potential to energetically drive their research forward as well as be recognized nationally and internationally. The applicant should also have obtained good, long-term and preferably external funding and have the potential to obtain further external funding.  The applicant should have shown teaching and supervision experience and demonstrated good leadership qualities.

Furthermore, the applicant should have a research background in public health with a focus on cardiovascular and geriatric epidemiology. Applicants should have broad experience in epidemiological research and the application of advanced statistical methods with a specific focus on life course analysis. The applicant should also have experience in statistical analyses using SPSS, SAS, or Stata, and in particular analyses of large longitudinal datasets. Applicants must have conducted their own research projects, obtained research funding in competition, and published several scientific articles. Applicants should also have proven experience in course management, supervision, and teaching in epidemiology. We are looking for a responsible and driven person who is positive, flexible, and pedagogical. The work requires accuracy, planning skills, independence, and a structured approach. The position requires knowledge of Swedish and very good written and spoken English.

Assessment criteria

In the assessment we place particular emphasis on scientific excellence, experience of leading their own projects and having received their own research grants.

It is particularly meritorious that the applicant has 

  • shown documented good experience and ability to lead scientific studies in the field of cardiovascular and geriatric epidemiology
  • published several scientific articles, as first author as well as last author
  • shown documented good experience and ability of planning, managing and coordinating research projects involving collaboration at national and international level
  • obtained competitive external funding
  • documented experience of collaboration with stakeholders such as authorities and organisations
  • experience of teaching at undergraduate and/or postgraduate level
  • completed courses in higher education pedagogy
  • experience in supervising undergraduate and postgraduate students
  • shown documented good experience and ability of analysis using statistical software, e.g. SPSS, STATA or SAS

It is meritorious that the applicant has shown

  • documented experience in life course epidemiology
  • good teaching skills documented through course evaluations
  • knowledge of and documented experience with systematic literature reviews

After an overall assessment of the expertise and merits of the applicants in relation to the subject area, Karolinska Institutet will determine which of them has the best potential to contribute to a positive development of the activities at KI.
