The Department of Medical Epidemiology and Biostatistics (MEB) is among the largest departments of epidemiology in Europe with special focus on increasing our knowledge of the aetiology of different diseases. The research group at the Department of Medical Epidemiology and Biostatistics, Karolinska Institutet in Stockholm has a broad research interest in women's and children's health. The primary focus is to understand and map sex specific risk factors, etiology and long-term consequences of preterm birth on neuropsychiatric and related disorders. A second research area is women's health in relation to pregnancy and childbirth.

Your mission

In a collaboration between the Karolinska Institutet in Sweden, the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, New York and the Chinese University Hong Kong you will participate in world-leading medical research to fill critical knowledge gaps using modern statistical and epidemiological methods.

The research program aims to (1) gain a comprehensive understanding of sex specific risks for neuropsychiatric disorders, with focus on autism; (2) determine causes for preterm birth and it's consequences on neuropsychiatric disorders and children's health, and (3) examine determinants for women's health and it's consequences on children's health.

You will have access to world unique databases compiled from national registers in the Nordic countries and Israel as well as a longitudinal cohort study of 50,000 women with repeatedly collected information on lifestyle factors and medical conditions. You will work in an international research group and apply statistical methods for life-course epidemiological analyses. You will have the opportunities to initiate and lead the work from planning phase to publication of research manuscripts. You will also participate as an expert in collaborative studies.

You will publish, as lead as well as co-author, in peer review high impact journals.

Your profile

To be eligible for employment as a postdoctor a doctoral degree or a foreign degree deemed to be equivalent to a doctoral degree is required. This eligibility requirement must be fulfilled at the latest at the time of the employment decision. It is considered as an advantage if you have completed your doctoral degree within the last three years, if there are special reasons, your degree may have been completed earlier.

You have a background in medicine, public health, statistics or epidemiology and a PhD in statistics, epidemiology or similar and have experience in performing large-scale data analysis using standard statistical software. SAS is our primary software for data management and statistical analyses but experience of R is an advantage. Other software skills e.g. Python, Stata and UNIX is an advantage. You should have experience in survival analyses. Examples of statistical methods used are Cox regression, logistic regression and poisson regression, including various methods to deal with correlated data, confounding, modification and mediation. There are ample possibilities in attending courses in statistics, epidemiology, computer programming and similar.

A track record in writing scientific publications in English is required, and publications in high-impact journals is a merit. International research experience is preferred. Experience of presenting at international conferences is a merit.

The applicant should be experienced in working in a multidisciplinary context, possess communication and organizational skills, and know how to successfully multitask. Experience of the Nordic registers may be beneficial.

Important personal characteristics are that you are meticulous, analytical and structured.
