The Department of Laboratory Medicine's core activities are research and education. The subject area of ​​laboratory medicine connects basic scientific research, clinical research, and health care. The institution's role is to transfer and refine medical knowledge to care in cooperation between academia, health care, and industry.

 

Description of the subject area

At the Division of Clinical Microbiology, research, teaching, and clinical activities related to disease processes caused by human pathogenic viruses and bacteria are carried out. In the subject area of ​​systems biology and bioinformatics, we are announcing a lectureship to ensure the Divisions strong research and teaching profile, where we need to meet future needs within the teaching programs for biomedical analysts, doctors, nurses, dentists, etc. We are looking for a Senior Lecturer in systems biology with a strong translational research profile who will contribute with a deep understanding of disease mechanisms and will drive method development.

 

Your mission

The focus of the position is research. We are looking for a researcher who can develop the subject of systems biology, primarily through understanding factors that influence the course of the disease, where the goal is to optimize treatment for everyone. Supervision of doctoral students and teaching, including course responsibility, on the department's undergraduate and one year master programs is expected, i.a. on the courses in scientific methodology and degree project in biomedical laboratory science on the biomedical analyst program. As a Senior Lecturer, you are expected to contribute to academic leadership and be involved in the Divisions development in research and education. In addition, a future Senior Lecturer must actively contribute with his subject expertise in systems biology , as well as be able to develop and follow up the Divisions teaching responsibilities within education programs at undergraduate and advanced level.

 

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible for an employment as Senior Lecturer with focus on research, in addition to holding a Degree of Doctor, PhD, or having equivalent scientific expertise, the applicant must have demonstrated good pedagogical expertise and excellent scientific expertise (See the instructions regarding the Appointment Procedure for Teachers at Karolinska Institutet).

The applicant must be an active and independent researcher in systems biology with a focus on infectious diseases and disease mechanisms and have the ability to obtain external research grants.

The applicant must have documented experience in doctoral supervision as main supervisor.

Since the position includes academic leadership, teaching, course responsibility and acting as an examinator on the Department’s undergraduate program, the applicant must, in addition to English, possess basic knowledge of Swedish and must take courses to reach C1 level within two years, according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages ​​(GERS).

 

Assessment criteria

The Senior Lectureship has a focus on research. The assessment will weight qualifications as follows: scientific expertise (3), pedagogical expertise (2), leadership, development and collaboration expertise (2)

For employment as Senior Lecturer at Karolinska Institutet, the eligibility requirements and assessment criteria stated in the Instructions regarding the Appointment Procedure 3.2.1 are applied in relation to established profile of employment.

 

It is particularly meritorious that the applicant has shown

  • Conducted high-quality research in systems biology with a focus on disease mechanisms for infectious diseases in recent years and demonstrated potential to continue conducting high-quality research.
  • Published research results of high quality in peer-reviewed journals in systems biology. It must be clear from placement in the author list that the applicant had a leading role in the work.
  • Has been the main applicant for received external research funds in systems biology in national and/or international competition during the last five years and has the potential to obtain additional research funding.
  • Documented experience of leading a research group.
  • Demonstrated ability to use and develop methods in systems biology with a focus on infectious diseases

 

In addition, it also applies that applicants must have completed 10 weeks of higher education pedagogic training or have equivalent skills according to SUHF's recommendations for credentialing higher education pedagogic training. If such training is missing at the time of employment, the lecturer must undergo such training within the framework of the employment during the first two years of employment.

After an overall assessment of the expertise and merits of the applicants in relation to the subject area, Karolinska Institutet will determine which of them has the best potential to contribute to a positive development of the activities at KI.
