Do you want to contribute to top quality medical research?

You are welcomed to join a young, dynamic research group working translationally to understand how expansion of the human white adipose tissue leads to the emergence of cardiometabolic diseases, most notably insulin resistance and dyslipidaemia. As a part of a well-established larger network of researchers in metabolism and cardiovascular inflammation, our lab aims to identify mechanisms of disease initiation during obesity, with a particular focus on determining the metabolic drivers of adipocyte dysfunction.

Your mission

The postdoctoral project is focused on studying how hypertrophic adipocyte growth impacts core metabolic functions of adipocytes during weight gain and obesity. This will be done using transgenic mice and our newly developed in vitro model of human unilocular adipocyte spheroids (Ioannidou et al, J. Physiology 2022). The project will also involve analysis of human sequencing data and studying metabolic fluxes in isolated cells, as well as working together with national and international collaborators and colleagues in the lab on adjoining projects. Our overall aim is to understand the initiation of local adipose disease pathology during weight gain and find ways to prevent tissue dysfunction and inflammation by targeting adipocyte metabolism.

Your profile

We are looking for a highly enthusiastic, creative and independent researcher with a PhD and a strong research background in experimental cellular/molecular research, including, but not limited to, cellular metabolism and metabolic disease, preferentially documented with several research publications. Applicants must have solid experience from in vivo animal research and be able to independently or together with colleagues plan, perform, analyse and document animal experiments as well as maintain animal colonies. Scientific expertise and an ambitious, driving and problem-solving attitude are highly valued. Excellent communication skills in both spoken and written English are a must, as is the ability to work in a team and help out colleagues both experimentally and by discussing. If interested, the researcher will get opportunities to co-write grants and articles, as well as career mentorship, providing an excellent basis for a further career in academia.

To be eligible for employment as a postdoctor a doctoral degree or a foreign degree deemed to be equivalent to a doctoral degree is required. This eligibility requirement must be fulfilled at the latest at the time of the employment decision. It is considered as an advantage if you have completed your doctoral degree within the last three years, if there are special reasons, your degree may have been completed earlier.
