Karolinska Institutet, Department of NVS, Division of Clinical Geriatrics

The Department of Neurobiology, Care Sciences and Society (NVS) conducts world leading research in aging, dementia, epidemiology and care sciences. This research extends from basic molecular and cell levels to clinical research and societal studies. NVS educates almost a third of KI students at basic and advanced levels. The Department has approximately 540 employees and a revenue 2023 of 530 million SEK. It comprises seven divisions, located at Campus Flemingsberg and Campus Solna.

The Division of Clinical Geriatric, with over 100 employed and affiliated researchers are located both in Neo, Campus Flemingsberg and in the Q-building in Solna. We conduct research focusing on cognitive impairment, dementia, and other aging related disorders, and education, among other medical graduates. Our research is multi-faceted and is in close collaboration with leading institutions and clinics worldwide. The research is clinically oriented with an emphasis on diagnosis, prevention and treatment. The division has a close cooperation with the Medical Unit Aging within Theme Inflammation and Aging at Karolinska University Hospital.

Do you want to contribute to top quality medical research?

Division of Clinical Geriatrics consists of a multi-disciplinary team at the forefront of translational Alzheimer's disease (AD) research using cutting-edge technology with aims to develop new diagnostic biomarkers and new treatment strategies in AD.

This postdoctoral scholarship is now open in the research group of Professor Maria Eriksdotter which is localized within the Division of Clinical Geriatrics in the Neo building at KI Campus South in Huddinge (Stockholm).

Duties

We are looking for an enthusiastic and highly motivated scientist who is interested in participating in a multi-disciplinary team at the forefront of translational AD research. Our group has a lot of experience with therapeutic application in AD targeting the cholinergic pathways, primarily by targeting the neurotrophin – Nerve Growth Factor (NGF) using encapsulated cell (EC Biodelivery) mediated drug delivery or by using cholinesterase inhibitor (ChEI’s) treatment. In relation to our previous observations, we want to further our work by studying the factors which are involved in modulating NGF activity and stability along with the underlying signaling pathways involved in these aspects.

We will employ studies involving in-vitro experimentation, enzyme kinetics, and ex-vivo set-up to study the effect of certain modulators on NGF activity and stability. Using preclinical animal models of AD, we will assess the effect of different therapies targeted to treat AD and evaluate NGF related parameters to evaluate its potential as a biomarker. We will also evaluate the effect of AD treatment on NGF status using clinical samples to evaluate the accuracy of our preclinical data. We also have ongoing interest in developing nano-systems for drug delivery and diagnostics.

The environment provides excellent post-doctoral training in an international environment, with national and international collaborations, and possibilities to publish in high impact journals.

Entry requirements

Scholarships for postdoctoral qualification can be established for foreign researchers who place their qualifications in Sweden. The purpose of scholarships for postdoctoral qualification is to promote internationalization and contribute to research qualification after a doctorate or equivalent.

A scholarship for carrying out postdoctoral research can be granted for a maximum of two years within a four year period following the receipt of a doctoral degree or equivalent. To be eligible for a postdoctoral scholarship, the person must have obtained a doctorate or a foreign degree deemed to be equivalent to a doctorate. Applicants who have not completed a doctorate at the end of the application period may also apply, provided that all requirements for a completed degree are met before the (intended) start date of the post doctoral education.

The head of the department determines whether their previous training and scholarly qualifications correspond to a Swedish doctorate or higher.

For this scholarship you must hold a PhD degree in the field of biological/biomedical/chemical sciences, with experience in dealing with mice, histological evaluation of tissues, ELISA, immunochemistry, fluorescence microscopy, Flow-Cytometry, qPCR, HPLC, western blotting, and cell culture (primary cell culture and various cell lines). Documented proficiency in designing, synthesis and characterization of nanoparticles would be a valuable asset. You should have a strong interest in neurodegenerative diseases.

The successful candidate will also be expected to have established record of high-quality scientific research and publications, ability to act both independently and as a member of a collaborative, scientific team, excellent verbal and written English skills, and to write and apply for grants.

This postdoctoral scholarship is for one year initially with the possibility of extension for a further year, considering all the criteria are fulfilled.

Location: Karolinska Institutet, Campus South - Flemingsberg

Type of scholarship

The amount is tax free and it is set for twelve months at a time, paid out on a six months basis. In exceptional cases, shorter periods may be acceptable.
