Our research group (PI: Per Nilsson) investigates the role of autophagy in Alzheimer’s disease and we are now taking our autophagy research to the next level to assess the feasibility of using autophagy in a therapeutic strategy to ameliorate Alzheimer’s disease pathology. We are looking for an enthusiastic and highly motivated scientist who is interested in working with us in an inspiring and interactive research environment in BioClinicum, KI Campus Solna. The group has on-going collaborative projects with national and international research groups.
Your mission
The position will include responsibilities in projects assessing the role of autophagy in Alzheimer’s disease and how autophagy can be used in a translational approach to ameliorate Alzheimer’s pathology including tau. The candidate will form his/her research line and be involved in all parts of the projects ranging from planning and performing experimental work to project and data management, and dissemination of results including driving publications. You will interact closely with other members of the research group and supervise doctoral students and master’s students in their projects. The position also involves teaching assignments on advanced- and doctoral education level.
The employment as Assistant Professor is time limited for 6 years with the right to apply for promotion to Senior Lecturer.
Those eligible for employment as an Assistant Professor are individuals who have been awarded a PhD or attained equivalent research competence. Preference should be given to those who were awarded a PhD or attained equivalent research competence no more than five years prior to the expiry of the application period for the position as assistant professor.
Those who have been awarded a PhD or attained equivalent research competence earlier may however be considered if special grounds exist.

Candidates must have finished a postdoctoral period and is expected to have a background in neurobiology and neurodegeneration with good knowledge of the brain, protein homeostasis, autophagy function from both in vitro and in vivo settings with animal models of Alzheimer’s. That includes previous knowledge on confocal imaging and electron microscopy to analyze Alzheimer brain pathologies, protein, and gene expression analysis, including transcriptomics and proteomics, and animal behavior to assess memory and cognition. Proven interest in spreading mechanisms including exosome biology as well as exploring targets for therapeutic intervention will be highly recommended.
Candidates should demonstrate potential to obtain research funding, well documented scientific production, and interest in teaching and supervision of bachelor, master and PhD students. Candidates must be able to work independently, take own initiatives, have good collaborative skills, demonstrate good leadership qualities, be socially competent and be fluent in written and spoken English.

An Assistant Professor employed in accordance with the Higher Education Ordinance Chapter 4 Section 12a shall be promoted to Senior Lecturer if he or she is eligible for an employment as Senior Lecturer in accordance with the Instructions regarding the Appointment Procedure for Teachers at Karolinska Institutet and is assessed to be suitable for such employment in accordance with the assessment criteria that KI has decided should be applied when being promoted to Senior Lecturer. The assessment criteria stated in the Instructions regarding the Appointment Procedure for Teachers at Karolinska Institutet that was valid at the time of appointment as Assistant Professor will be applied when applying for promotion to Senior Lecturer. Current assessment criteria is found here. Such promotion results in a permanent position as Senior Lecturer.
