We are looking for 1-2 postdocs to head research projects linked to a recently granted NIH-application aiming to advance our insight on rheumatic fever; a severe sequalae to group A streptococcal infections resulting in several hundred thousand deaths yearly. The goal is to unravel what defines a protective versus pathologic immune response to infection and to use this knowledge to develop a rapid diagnostic assay to achieve early identification of these cases. This project will be done in close collaboration with teams in Australia and the UK. The Swedish team is responsible for development of human tonsil models which will involve advanced tissue engineering and exploration of immunological responses in tissue and single cells. Advanced omics, flow cytometry and microscopy will be used to determine immune responses and pathogen characteristics in patients and the infected models.
