The Institute for Environmental Medicine (IMM) is a department at Karolinska Institutet and an interdisciplinary research institute in the field of environmental medicine in the broadest sense. IMM conducts world-leading research in the areas of epidemiology, biostatistics, occupational and environmental medicine, toxicology and physiology, as well as in chronic inflammatory diseases.

Description of the subject area

The Unit for Immunology and Chronic Disease conducts research in various inflammatory processes with a focus on cellular, immunological, molecular and genetic/genomic factors. Understanding the importance of genetics in the development of inflammatory tissue processes is a major part of our research, but also the stratification of individuals to develop therapeutic strategies that best suit a certain group of patients as well as the interaction between genetic and environmental factors.

Your mission

We are looking for a Principal Researcher who will run an independent research line in inflammation genetics with a focus on the importance of genetics in disease heterogeneity and disease development in patients with systemic autoimmune diseases such as systemic lupus erythematosus, rheumatoid arthritis, Sjögren's syndrome and systemic sclerosis. The applicant is expected to supervise doctoral students and postdocs, as well as contribute to teaching in genetics, genomics of these diseases.

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible for employment as a Principal Researcher, in addition to holding a Degree of Doctor, PhD, or having equivalent scientific expertise, the applicant must have demonstrated research expertise. The applicant must also be a Research Leader and have established their own line of research. The applicant should furthermore have shown documented, high-quality scientific production, particularly in the last six years and have the potential to energetically drive their research forward as well as be recognized nationally and internationally. The applicant should also have obtained good, long-term and preferably external funding and have the potential to obtain further external funding.  The applicant should have shown teaching and supervision experience and demonstrated good leadership qualities.

Assessment criteria

For employment as a Principal Researcher at Karolinska Institutet, the eligibility requirements and assessment criteria specified in the rules for positions other than teaching positions are applied in relation to the established employment profile.

It is particularly meritorious that the applicant has shown

  • Conducted high-quality research in genetic epidemiology, genetics and bioinformatics in recent years and demonstrated potential to continue conducting high-quality research.
  • Published high-quality research results in peer-reviewed journals in the field of disease and molecular genetics and genomics as well as bioinformatic analyzes with genomic data, and had a prominent place in the author list, or otherwise demonstrated a leading role in the work.
  • Knowledge of autoimmunity, systemic autoimmunity, systemic lupus erythematosus and rheumatic and inflammatory diseases and experience in genetic and genomic research of these diseases.
  • Experience of large-scale studies of biomarkers in relation to the autoimmune diseases.
  • Been the main applicant for received external research funds in national and/or international competition, and have the potential to obtain additional research funding.
  • Experience of leading a research group.
  • Experience of international consortium collaborations.

It is meritorious that the applicant has shown

  • Experience teaching medical genetics and genetic epidemiology with a focus on autoimmune diseases.
  • Good language skills in Swedish.
