Do you want to contribute to top quality medical research?

The Ken Chien group belongs to the Department of Cell and Molecular Biology (CMB) at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, one of the world’s leading medical universities. CMB is a department with a strong focus on basic science. CMB conducts research and education in cell biology, molecular biology, developmental biology, stem cell biology, cancer and infection biology. The lab is located in Biomedicum, one of Europe's largest laboratories with ultramodern facilities and rich opportunities for collaboration and career development.

Research group

The central scientific interest of the Chien laboratory is to understand heart development at the molecular and cellular level, with the ultimate goal of applying the developmental principles, logic, pathways, technology, and model systems to unravel human heart disease. We use several different approaches to study heart development, including in vitro stem cell differentiation system and in vivo embryo development studies.

Duties

We are seeking a highly motivated and ambitious postdoctor with a strong background in stem cell and molecular biology. The research project will focus on characterizing the role of tight junctions in mammalian cardiogenesis and tissue repair using mouse models alongside cardiac organoids.

Entry requirements

It´s required to have a PhD in a relevant area. For success in this position, it is important that the candidate has experience working with mouse models and holds a Function B certificate or equivalent. Additionally, the candidate should have done extensive training in human embryonic stem cell culture, differentiation and manipulation techniques. Experience with advanced microscopy techniques and CRISPR/Cas9 technology for genome engineering are also required. The candidate should thrive in teamwork while being an independent thinker and must speak and write fluent English with excellent communication skills. The candidate’s personal skills will be highly valued.

Scholarships for postdoctoral qualification can be established for foreign researchers who place their qualifications in Sweden. The purpose of scholarships for postdoctoral qualification is to promote internationalization and contribute to research qualification after a doctorate or equivalent.

A scholarship for carrying out postdoctoral research can be granted for a maximum of two years within a four year period following the receipt of a doctoral degree or equivalent.
To be eligible for a postdoctoral scholarship, the person must have obtained a doctorate or a foreign degree deemed to be equivalent to a doctorate. Applicants who have not completed a doctorate at the end of the application period may also apply, provided that all requirements for a completed degree are met before the (intended) start date of the post doctoral education.

The head of the department determines whether their previous training and scholarly qualifications correspond to a Swedish doctorate or higher.

Meriting

It´s meriting for the candidate to show experience in the areas of cell adhesions and/or cardiac development/regeneration through publication of high impact research papers. Experience in cell and tissue mechanics, tissue engineering, computational modelling and/or bioinformatic analysis will be considered highly meriting.

Type of scholarship

The amount is tax free and it is set for twelve months at a time, paid out on a six months basis. In exceptional cases, shorter periods may be acceptable.

Location: Stockholm
