Do you want to contribute to top quality medical research?

The Unit of Integrative Metabolomics in the Institute of Environmental Medicine (IMM) announces a position for an LC-MS/MS Research Engineer. The position is temporary for 1 year. The Unit is led by Craig Wheelock and includes the new launched Karolinska Institute Small Molecule Mass Spectrometry (KI-SMMS) core facility. The research unit is housed in a new purpose-built laboratory that includes 5 state-of-the art mass spectrometers and the associated sample processing equipment.

Your mission

The primary responsibility is to take the lead in developing LC-MS/MS methods for quantification of novel omega-3 fatty acid metabolites, so called specialized pro-resolving mediators (SPMs), in order to progress innovative research on inflammation. The work will be centered on the analysis of various biological matrices from both preclinical and clinical samples as well as from in vitro models. As a member of the bioanalytical team, you will also contribute to maintaining the laboratory equipment. To progress this new and exciting field of lipid mediator bioanalytical analysis, you will work closely with experienced team members and interact with collaborators from both the preclinical setting as well as practicing physicians and organic chemists developing new analytical reference standards. The need is to develop methods that are simultaneously sensitive and specific, capable of quantifying a broad profile of lipid mediators, and robust for use in large clinical studies. These methods will be developed, and bench marked on multiple mass spectrometers from different vendors in order to develop an understanding of the best practices for quantifying lipid mediators.

Your profile

The ideal candidate will have an extensive background in LC-MS/MS quantitation, including various sample preparation techniques. We believe you are interested in this exciting new biological field of resolving inflammation and want to contribute to the academic research performed at the Karolinska Institutet to become a world leader in the bioanalysis of inflammatory small molecular biomarkers. Previous experience from industry positions is greatly valued, as well as work in GLP/GLP-like environments. Experience in validating methods according to FDA and EMA guidelines is highly valued. Prior experience working with Sciex and/or Waters instrumentation would be a significant merit as well as experience working in clinical environment. Experience in adapting methods for automation including 96-well based assays is a merit. As a bioanalytical team member, we expect you to share your analytical experience and communicate your results clearly, both internally and with collaborating partners, to jointly move the research team forward. The current team has mixed nationalities, including Swedish, but the working language in the lab is English.
