The position will be placed in the Rare Disease research group of Ann Nordgren and Anna Lindstrand which conducts research about rare diseases. The research group consists of 5 PhD students, a laboratory technician, four postdocs, one lab manager, one senior research specialist, two bioinformaticians and several clinically employed MD/PhDs that work part time with research. We have easy access to the resources and expertise available in the Bioclinicum building (located within the grounds of the Karolinska University Hospital), a writing room and all other facilities necessary for the planned research. Ann Nordgren is register holder of the RADICA register.

Your mission

You will join our efforts to study childhood cancer predisposition and comorbidities in rare diseases by performing register-based epidemiological studies.

We are looking for an epidemiologist that can strengthen our research group and perform the following:

  •  Project planning, study design and statistical analysis 
  •  Take part in register-based epidemiological studies 
  •  Collaborate with both internal and external researchers and help them with data extraction from the RADICA register 
  •  Organization and documentation of RADICA register structure, routines, and security issues 
  •  Preparation and submission of manuscripts and grant applications 
  •  Supervision of doctoral students 
  •  Administrative tasks 

We are looking for an excellent team player with interpersonal skills, organized, efficient, and flexible in dealing with unpredictability and changes. The applicant will need to both feel comfortable with working in teams and demonstrate good interpersonal skills and also be independent enough to formulate new hypotheses and critically examine the results. Emphasis will be placed on personal suitability.

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible for employment as a Senior Research Specialist, in addition to holding a Degree of Doctor, PhD, or having equivalent scientific expertise, the applicant must have demonstrated good level of research expertise with significant scientific production. The applicant must also have demonstrated a good scientific independence to which their own contribution has been significant and a research plan of high quality with clear potential for the future.

Assessment criteria

For employment as Senior Research Specialist at Karolinska Institutet, the eligibility requirements and assessment criteria stated in the Rules regarding other positions than teaching positions are applied in relation to the established profile of employment.

It is particularly meritorious that the applicant has shown

- Substantial experience in working with register data from Statistics Sweden (SCB) and the National Board of Health and Welfare
- Substantial experience in planning and performing epidemiological studies
- Experience in childhood cancer epidemiology
- Experience in rare disease epidemiology
- Experience in supervising doctoral students
- Documented research independence (such as docentur)

It is meritorious that the applicant has shown

- Advanced experience with both the statistical software SAS and Stata
- Experience in using data from the Cancer Register and the Swedish Childhood Cancer Register
- Knowledge of biostatistics
- Capability to receive grants in competition
- Experience with collaborative projects
- Experience in teaching epidemiology
- Excellence in written and verbal communication using English
- Attention to detail, problem solving ability and social skills
